The Kaolin Mine Ruins Park is a cultural tourism attraction.

The Kaolin Mine Ruins Park consists of two scenic areas: the Kaolin Ruins and the Dongbu Ancient Street. Kaolin-Dongbu is among the first batch of historically and culturally renowned villages in Jiangxi Province. Among them, Kaolin was an ancient and well-known production area for ceramic raw materials in China and the naming site of the world-renowned “kaolin.”

Dongbu was a distribution center for kaolin, glaze materials, and other Jingdezhen ceramic raw materials during the Ming and Qing dynasties, and is hailed as the “source of the Maritime Silk Road.” To this day, it still retains relatively intact ancient streets, old shops, and historic docks, and has served as a filming location for movies such as Sparkling Red Star. The entire Dongbu Ancient Street is divided into Upper Street, Middle Street, and Lower Street, with streets about three meters wide, paved with bluestone slabs and granite. Shops line both sides of the street. Originally, there were docks on both the eastern and western sides of Dongbu Ancient Street, but today only the eastern dock remains well-preserved.

The Kaolin Ruins are the core area of the Kaolin Mine Ruins Park, and the tour begins with the “Ancient Path.” Built during the Song Dynasty, the path stretches 2.5 kilometers in length and 2 meters in width, entirely paved with granite, and features a total of 5,600 steps. Over the past 200 years, miners transported loads of kaolin along this road to the Dongbu Dock, which was then shipped to Jingdezhen. After 200 years of mining, the Kaolin Mountain left behind numerous extraction sites, with ancient mining pits being one of the most prominent features. There are hundreds of ancient mining pits on Kaolin Mountain, four of which remain well-preserved to this day.

This auspicious land of the Kaolin Mine Ruins Park is not only the capital of ceramics, but also home to the Scholar’s Mansion that showcases family rituals, the site of an anti-Japanese mobilization meeting, the former quarters of a Red Army guerrilla unit, as well as Ming and Qing commercial streets and ancient docks that reflect the prosperity of the past, including the Dongbu Dock and Dongbu Ancient Street.

Special Tips

The houses along the Dongbu river are built with one side facing the street and the other facing the river, featuring stilt-style architecture reminiscent of the ancient town of Fenghuang in western Hunan. Due to the relatively inconvenient transportation, this area generally sees few tourists. Those who love authentic ancient streets and tranquility should not miss it.
