Fuzhou Martyrs' Cemetery

The Fuzhou Martyrs' Cemetery is a classic red tourism destination and a patriotic education base.

The Fuzhou Martyrs' Cemetery, established in February 1998 and situated in Chaijialing, Zhongling Subdistrict Office, Fuzhou City, spans over 30 acres. It honors 9,454 named revolutionary martyrs who gave their lives across different historical periods, along with countless unnamed heroes. The site preserves archives of 147 martyrs, 436 martyr photos, and 29 revolutionary relics. It prominently showcases the deeds of 54 notable martyrs—both native to Fuzhou and those who sacrificed their lives here—including Zhao Xingnong, Fu Lie, Zhou Jianping, and Fu Zhuting, as well as the history of Fuzhou’s revolutionary struggles under the leadership of the Communist Party.

The Fuzhou Martyrs' Cemetery commemorates nearly 10,000 martyrs who sacrificed their lives across various revolutionary periods. The cemetery’s burial area covers 3,100 square meters and is the final resting place of 129 revolutionary martyrs. Green spaces account for two-thirds of the total cemetery area. The martyrs' cemetery complex consists of four main sections: the Revolutionary Martyrs Monument, the Martyrs’ Burial Area, the Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Hall, and the Memorial Plaza. At the center of the cemetery stands a 15-meter-tall Martyrs’ Monument, inscribed with eight golden characters reading “Eternal Glory to the Revolutionary Martyrs.” Below the monument is a relief carving depicting “The Million Strong Army’s Victorious Crossing of the Yangtze River.” In front of the Monument lies a memorial plaza spanning over 1,000 square meters, capable of accommodating more than 2,000 people for commemorative activities. Behind the Monument is the Martyrs’ Burial Area. The Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Hall, which opened in 2007, is located to the left front of the Monument. It has a floor area of 820 square meters and a partial three-story structure. The hall is divided into a Memorial Hall and an Exhibition Hall. At the front of the Memorial Hall is a sculpture portraying countless revolutionary fighters striving bravely and pressing forward, reflecting the intensity of battlefields at the time. On either side are statues of four renowned martyrs from Fuzhou: Zhao Xingnong, one of the founders of Jiangxi’s local Party and League organizations; Fu Lie, the first Secretary of the Sichuan Provincial Committee and Military Commission of the CPC; Zhou Jianping, a Red Army general and anti-Japanese hero; and Fu Zhuting. The sides feature a preface and a list of Fuzhou’s revolutionary martyrs. The Exhibition Hall primarily displays the city’s revolutionary struggle history and the heroic deeds of its martyrs. Exhibits include lists of martyrs, personal belongings, photographs, accounts of revolutionary struggles, and introductions to major historical events. The newly built Revolutionary History Memorial Hall serves as a key venue for patriotic education, with detailed descriptions of exhibits, exhibition content, and displayed texts. The list of martyrs includes 9,623 named individuals who sacrificed their lives in Fuzhou during the First Revolutionary Civil War, the Second Revolutionary Civil War, the War of Resistance Against Japan, and the Liberation War. The hall is staffed with professional guides who provide explanations on patriotism and revolutionary traditions.
