The Former Site of the Battalion Headquarters of the 3rd Battalion, 1st Regiment, 1st Division, First Workers’ and Peasants’ Revolutionary Army (Former Site of Kuiguang Academy) is a classic red tourism attraction.

The site is located at No. 15 Chengnan Road, Yongning Town, Tonggu County, Yichun City, Jiangxi Province. Originally built in the 40th year of the Qianlong reign during the Qing Dynasty (1775 AD), it covers a total area of 690 square meters. It was designated as a provincial-level cultural relics protection unit in 2001.

Kuiguang Academy was founded by Zhou Yuheng, a Hakka settler in Tonggu, and was established on the foundation of the Kuiguang Hall. The Kuiguang Hall had been raising funds since the 40th year of the Qianlong reign (1775 AD), and was converted into an academy in the 17th year of the Daoguang reign (1837 AD) in the eleventh lunar month. It continued as such until the abolition of the imperial examination system in the 32nd year of the Guangxu reign (1906 AD), when it was turned into "Kuiguang Higher Primary School."

During the Great Revolution period, this place became the birthplace of the revolutionary movement in Tonggu. Progressive intellectuals such as Chen Baoyuan and Li Xiu led several anti-imperialist and anti-feudal struggles while they were students. Later, they worked here as teachers, continuing their revolutionary activities, recruiting Communist Party members, and establishing the first Party branch in the Yichun region—the Tonggu Branch of the CPC—in the winter of 1925.

In August 1927, a revolutionary armed force under the leadership of our Party—the Liuyang Workers’ and Peasants’ Volunteer Corps (later reorganized as the 3rd Battalion of the 1st Regiment, 1st Division, First Workers’ and Peasants’ Revolutionary Army)—entered Tonggu. The 1st Battalion of this regiment was stationed at Kuiguang Academy, where they wrote numerous revolutionary slogans, including “Nanchang Uprising.” In 1928, after the Pingjiang Uprising, Comrade Peng Dehuai led the Red Fifth Army in multiple campaigns across Tonggu. The Political Department of the Red Fifth Army also wrote a large number of proclamations and slogans here, including the “Ten-Point Program of the Communist Party” and the “Land Program.” Kuiguang Academy is one of the earliest higher education venues in Tonggu County, as well as an important revolutionary site. It also holds the most preserved and best-protected revolutionary slogans among key sites in the area.

Yongning Town: A town under the jurisdiction of Tonggu County and the county seat. One of Jiangxi Province’s top 100 towns. In 1949, it was known as Yongning Street in Dingjiang District; renamed Yongning Town in 1950; became Yongning Commune in 1958; and reverted to Yongning Town in 1981. Located in the southern part of the county, the town government is based in Yongning. It covers an area of 126.4 square kilometers with a population of 27,000. Shanggao–Liuyang Highway runs east to west through the area.
