Hanshou Lake

Located in the southeastern part of Xiushi Town, Fengcheng City, Jiangxi Province, Hanshou Lake is 35 kilometers (a 35-minute drive) from the city center and 95 kilometers from the provincial capital, Nanchang. It can be directly accessed via National Highway 105 and Fengfu Road, boasting a prominent geographical advantage and excellent transportation links. It is truly a leisure “back garden” for the provincial capital and lies within a prime tourism zone. Hanshou Lake is a national second-class large reservoir, covering a water area of 7.1 square kilometers with an annual water storage capacity of over 100 million cubic meters. Its highest flood level is 72 meters, the flood limit level (from June 21 to September 30) is 69 meters, and the lowest water level is 45 meters. It is one of the major reservoirs in the middle and lower reaches of the Gan River. The surrounding area of the lake features lush vegetation and a sound ecological environment. With a northern subtropical humid climate, the region enjoys abundant rainfall and distinct seasons, along with a pleasant climate—especially in spring and autumn when the scenery is particularly beautiful. The annual average temperature of the lake area is between 17 to 18 degrees Celsius, and summer temperatures are 8–12 degrees lower than those in surrounding areas, making it suitable for a wide range of outdoor tourism activities. The lake water is of high quality, the shoreline is winding, and there are numerous inlets and coves. A rich diversity of wildlife and plant species can be found here, including pine, bamboo, cypress, and wild shrubs. The lake area also boasts abundant cultural landscapes. Originally established in 936 AD during the first year of the reign of Emperor Gaozu of the Later Jin Dynasty in the Five Dynasties period as the “Danxia Blessed Land,” the area includes the ruins of “Fucheng,” the earliest county seat of Fengcheng. Beneath the lake lie Jiubei Village, the hometown of Xu Da, a founding hero of the Ming Dynasty, and Tongzao Village, the birthplace of Sun Yugong, a third-place scholar in the Yongle Imperial Examination. Nearby, visitors can also find historic structures such as Leifang and Huangtang ancient villages, Chengrenfang, Zhushidi (Pillar Historian’s Mansion), and the Jiugui Lianfang Memorial Archway. Notable attractions include the Reclining Buddha Island, Niangniang Mountain, Shenkan Stockade, and the underwater ancient village. Hanshou Lake offers a variety of developed recreational activities such as exploring the lake’s central islands, boating, fishing, water skiing, swimming, hunting, camping, barbecuing, agritainment, and various entertainment programs.
