Riverside Ancient Village

Riverside Village, anciently known as Futan, is located in Yanxi Town, Taihe County. It originated in the Northern Song Dynasty, flourished during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and has a history of over a thousand years. Surrounded by river waters and shaded by green trees, the village features a vast grassland of a thousand mu in front and a backdrop of green mountains behind, boasting a unique natural ecological environment. It is a beautifully arranged village with both mountains and water.

Riverside Village is an ancient settlement with a long history, dating back over a thousand years. The village still preserves more than 60 contiguous buildings in the architectural styles of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, including ancestral halls, academies, pawnshops, and residences. Surrounding the village are ancient camphor trees, historic post roads, old ferries, ancient embankments, old docks, historic stages, old mills, temples, and the ruins of nunneries. There are also post-liberation structures such as “cooperatives,” “grain stations,” and “rice mills,” as well as protected cultural heritage sites like ancient bridges and pagodas.

Backed by mountains and fronted by water, the ancients developed a unique geomantic culture here based on the distinctive terrain, water systems, and environment. Examples include “Ox Resting in the Pool,” “Seven-Star Ancient Pond,” “Literary Pagoda by the Stream,” “Writing Desk Camphor Tree,” “Mulberry and Catalpa Trees,” and “Homes by the Water.”

Riverside Village is located in Yanxi Town, Taihe County, Jiangxi Province, situated by the Gan River over 15 km northeast of the county seat and about 10 km northeast of the Taihe North Exit on the Quannan Expressway. It takes approximately 30 minutes to drive from the county town.

It borders the Gan River to the east, lies 5 km south of the county seat, connects to Ji’an to the north, and adjoins the Taihe Economic Development Zone to the west. The town covers an area of 94 square kilometers, comprising 11 village committees and 1 neighborhood committee, with a total population of 21,936. The Beijing-Kowloon Railway runs through the town from north to south, passing through 26 groups across 7 village committees including Fenggang and Lianxi, spanning a total length of 16.5 km.
