Former Site of the Red Army's Temporary Field Hospital
The former site of the Red Army's temporary field hospital is a cultural heritage site protected by Fujian Province and a classic red tourism destination.
The former site of the Red Army's temporary field hospital is located at the foot of Renshou Peak in Shizhaixia Natural Village, Shucun Village, Linshe Township, Qingliu County.
Between July and August 1933, Peng Dehuai and Teng Daiyuan led the Red Army’s Eastern Army in their first military campaign in Fujian, fighting across Ninghua, Qingliu, Liancheng, Guiding (now part of Mingxi), and Jiangle. It was the peak of summer, and dysentery was rampant in the mountain villages. Many soldiers in the Red Army fell ill, and due to frequent battles, the number of wounded increased rapidly. The Red Army’s rear hospital was located over 20 li to the southwest of Ninghua in Chahugang, making transportation difficult. As a result, many wounded and sick soldiers could not receive timely medical treatment, leading to severe losses in troop strength. To provide better and more prompt medical care, minimize unnecessary casualties, preserve combat effectiveness, and achieve strategic objectives, the command of the Red Army’s Eastern Army utilized the unique geographical conditions of Shizhaixia to set up a temporary field hospital. This played a crucial role in the timely rescue of wounded soldiers, maintaining the fighting capacity of the Red Army, and furthering strategic goals. In March 1934, to prevent the Nationalist Army’s 10th Division from advancing into the Central Soviet Area, the Red 7th Army Corps and the Independent 7th Regiment of the Fujian Military Region’s Ningqinggui Sub-district ambushed the enemy at Tongtieling, on the border between Jiangle and Guiding (now Mingxi). Out of safety concerns, the leaders of the Ningqinggui Military Sub-district relocated the rear hospital and supply station from Guiding to Linshe, and Shizhaixia once again became the site of a Red Army hospital.
The former site of the Red Army's temporary field hospital is adjacent to the famous Renshou Peak scenic area in Linshe. The hospital site consists of three parts: Renshou Temple, Lianfeng Cave, and an independent Qiu family residence at the foot of the mountain. Renshou Temple was originally built during the Chenghua period of the Ming Dynasty. The Qiu family residence is made of earth and wood, with a large open space and a semicircular pond in front, surrounded by a stream that facilitated washing bandages and clothes. On the right side, there is a well that served as the drinking water source for the Red Army hospital. Inside Lianfeng Cave, beds were arranged for the recuperation of wounded soldiers. The residence collapsed and was partially destroyed during a hailstorm in October 1997, leaving only a side room remaining.
The Red Army’s temporary field hospital was designated as a cultural heritage site of Fujian Province by the Fujian Provincial People’s Government in November 2009.
