Guomeng Mountain Battle Site
The Guomeng Mountain Battle Site is a classic red tourism attraction.
The Guomeng Mountain Battle Site is located in Yucang Gorge, Litian Township, Qingliu County. Its main peak stands opposite another towering mountain, with steep terrain and rugged landscape. There is only a rugged mountain path on the southern mid-slope that winds along Yucang Gorge toward the mountain pass, which was the only route from Qingliu to Ninghua and then on to southern Jiangxi.
On January 9, 1931, Zhu De led the 1st, 3rd, and 4th Columns of the Red 4th Army as they returned from western Fujian to southern Jiangxi and moved on to battle in Jiangxi Province. Passing through Qingliu, they arrived at the foot of Guomeng Mountain. The next day, they engaged in fierce fighting here with the enemy local defense corps under Ma Hongxing and local militias from four nearby counties. Under the personal command of Zhu De, Xiao Ke, and others, the Red Army employed a surprise attack strategy—first launching a sudden strike against the enemy command post, then taking advantage of the enemy’s confusion to attack from both front and rear. After nearly four hours of intense combat, the Red Army annihilated over 600 enemy troops and captured a large quantity of weapons and ammunition. Following the victorious battle, the three columns of the Red 4th Army, still flying their battle flags and without resting their horses, advanced on the same day via Anle toward Ninghua, and then continued on to southern Jiangxi, thereby successfully achieving their intended strategic objective. The Battle of Guomeng Mountain was one of the most significant engagements during the Red 4th Army’s campaign in southern Jiangxi, and also marked the first battle fought by the Red Army within Qingliu County. This victory not only opened the way for the Red 4th Army to successfully return to southern Jiangxi, but also created favorable conditions for breaking the Nationalist Army’s second “Three-Provinces Joint Suppression Campaign” against the Western Fujian Soviet Area. It also provided strong support and inspiration for the revolutionary struggles in the Ninghua–Qingliu–Guidong area. Inspired by this victory, shortly afterward, in the border area between Qingliu and Ninghua around Caofang, the Party organization mobilized peasants to launch an armed uprising, successively establishing the Caofang and Litian Township Soviets. From then on, the revolutionary struggle in the Ninghua–Qingliu–Guidong area entered a new phase. The Battle of Guomeng Mountain has been included in the book Dictionary of Chinese Revolutionary Base Areas.
