Former Site of the Lifen Peasant Uprising

The Former Site of the Lifen Peasant Uprising is a classic red tourism attraction.

The Dongyue Temple at the Former Site of the Lifen Peasant Uprising is located at the entrance of Yangfang Village, Yangzhuang Village, Litian Township, Lichuan County.

On the night of September 15, 1930, villagers from Lifen, Yangfang, Yangbei, Huangzhutan, and Qiaotou in Lichuan, who could no longer endure the long-term exploitation and oppression by local landlords and gentry, under the leadership of the underground Communist Party organization and with the support of the Red Army stationed in Caofang, were led by Li Guangyao and other peasant movement activists eager for change. Armed with weapons such as broadswords, spears, hoes, and shotguns, they gathered at the Dongyue Temple in Yangfang to swear an oath and launch a joint armed uprising. The rebelling peasants marched in great numbers to surround the residence of Luo Kaishui, the wealthiest landlord in southern Lichuan, forcibly confiscated the Luo family’s weapons and ammunition, publicly burned various contracts, and opened the Luo family’s grain storage, distributing all the rice inside to the villagers. The uprising was successful, and subsequently, the first red political power in Lichuan was established.

The Dongyue Temple was originally built during the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty, funded jointly by four local families—Yang, Lü, Lai, and Chen. It was primarily used to worship the Eastern Peak God, Huang Feihu, and also served as a place for the four families to discuss affairs and establish village regulations. It has a history of over 400 years. The temple has experienced several periods of rise and decline throughout history, and underwent two renovations in 1995 and 2005. The renovated Dongyue Temple covers an area of approximately 400 square meters.
