Pipa Fort

Pipa Fort is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Located in Jianguo Village, Jianshe Town, it was first built during the Hongwu era of the Ming Dynasty and named for its resemblance to a pipa (a traditional Chinese musical instrument) lying on the ground. The ancestors of the Tu Fort’s You family, who believed in Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism, and other faiths, constructed the fort in a pipa shape with religious connotations. The fort comprises a small stream in front symbolizing the pipa strings, high fortress walls built from stone and rammed earth, sturdy stone gateways, unobstructed cavalry paths, emergency escape windows, the Three Saints Shrine, Guanyin Pavilion, as well as middle and rear towers. It is a unique, irregularly shaped earthen fort that uniquely integrates mountainous terrain, feng shui principles, and religious elements—there is only one such fort in the entire country. It has been designated as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
