The Datian Earth Forts Cluster is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Datian County is situated in the center of Fujian, adjacent to Dehua in the east, bordering Yongchun and Zhangping in the south, connecting with Yong'an and Sanyuan in the west, backed by Sanming and Sha County in the north, and neighboring Youxi in the northeast. On this ancient land, diverse cultures have intermingled, collided, emerged, and spread, forming a historical and cultural crossroads and transit hub. Owing to Datian’s distinctive natural and human environment, the ancestors of the Yuan and Ming dynasties built unique earth forts to defend against bandits. These structures have drawn close attention from both domestic and international observers.

The Datian Earth Forts originated in the Song and Yuan dynasties and flourished during the Ming and Qing periods. Their architectural style is unique, their construction system is distinctive, their overall preservation is intact, their environmental character is authentic, their clustered arrangement is regional, their architectural artistry is rational, and their defensive social function is notable—each embodying the characteristics of central Fujian. They hold significant historical, scientific, and artistic value. Different from the earthen buildings of western and southern Fujian (such as tulou), the walled villages of southern Jiangxi, the enclosed houses of Guangdong, and the watchtower residences and blockhouses of Sichuan and Tibet, the Datian Earth Forts are a native form of defensive vernacular architecture. They represent a bold stroke within the broader spectrum of Fujian’s vernacular architecture and occupy an important place among ancient Chinese defensive buildings. However, due to various natural and human factors, fewer than a hundred forts remain today, primarily concentrated in towns such as Jianshe, Guangping, Taihua, Junxi, and Jiyang, making them exceptionally rare and precious.

Datian currently has the largest number of surviving earth forts in Sanming City. The forts cluster is the most concentrated, numerous, earliest-built, structurally complex, and culturally rich collection of earth forts in Fujian. It was listed as a major new discovery during the third national cultural relics survey in 2009 and is considered a rare gem among the integrated earth fort and residential complexes in Sanming and even the entire province. In December 2010, the China•Fujian Earth Forts Academic Symposium was grandly held in Datian. Over 30 experts and scholars from across the country unanimously agreed that developing tourism resources related to the earth forts, preserving their construction techniques, and passing on their cultural legacy are of great significance. Currently, Datian County is actively working to have the Datian Earth Forts Cluster designated as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
