Dongtaihang Scenic Area

Dongtaihang Scenic Area is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

Dongtaihang Scenic Area, located in Wu’an City, Handan, Hebei Province, gets its name from its position on the eastern foothills of the Taihang Mountains. Covering a planned total area of 26 square kilometers, with the highest elevation at 1,428 meters, it shares the same Danxia landform as the Grand Canyon in the United States.

Dongtaihang Scenic Area is a mountainous natural attraction that combines the grandeur, wonder, danger, and steepness of the Taihang Mountains with peculiar rocks, sea of clouds, tranquility, and ever-changing views. Historically significant sites such as the famous 129th Division and many veteran revolutionaries once stationed, fought, and lived here. Developed by Zhongjingxin Group, the cliffside glass walkway built at an altitude of one thousand meters is hailed as an artificial marvel of the Taihang Mountains.

Strolling along the walkways of Dongtaihang Scenic Area with clouds swirling around is like stepping into a fairyland above the clouds. Ascending Dongtaihang allows you to “take in the views from the ridge of heaven and walk amidst the clouds,” bringing a newfound sense of clarity to life.

As early as 2.8 billion years ago, the Taihang Mountain region was submerged under the sea, where thick layers of clastic rock, iron-bearing siliceous rock, and carbonate strata were deposited. Influenced by the Wutai Movement and the Lüliang Movement, the ancient strata in the area generally underwent folding and metamorphism, accompanied by faulting and the intrusion of quartz veins.

By 1.8 billion years ago, Dongtaihang Scenic Area had formed a mixed, crystalline basement rock layer. Before 600 million years ago, the Taihang Mountain region was still an ocean. Later, through frequent crustal movements, the Taihang Mountain range gradually rose. It later became separated from the surrounding North China Plain, forming the steep eastern and gently sloping western terrain of the Taihang Mountains. Dongtaihang derives its name from its location on the eastern foothills of the Taihang Mountain range. The slopes on the east and west sides are relatively gentle, while those on the north and south are steep. The mountain ridge rises from south to north, with the northern peak, Sengshan Peak, being the highest at 1,428.2 meters. Streams on the east and west sides flow down the mountainside, encircling the area before converging at the Jingniang Lake district.

Terrain and Landforms

Dongtaihang Scenic Area is situated in Huoshui Township, Wu’an City, Hebei Province. Its planned boundaries lie between 113°52′48.61"—113°55′54.12" east longitude and 36°54′17.03"—36°59′06.12" north latitude, with an average elevation ranging from 600 to 1,480 meters. It neighbors the Ancient Wudang to the east, Jingniang Lake to the south, Qibu Valley to the west, and Changshou Village to the north. It is approximately 40 kilometers from downtown Wu’an and 70 kilometers from downtown Handan, with Provincial Highway S202 running adjacent to the area.
