Dajue Temple
Era: Ming and Qing Dynasties
Address: East Street, Baodi District, Tianjin City
Dajue Temple is located on the north side of East Street in Baodi District, Tianjin. Originally built during the Chongxi era of the Liao Dynasty (1032–1054), it was one of the Eight Scenic Spots of Baodi. It underwent renovations during both the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The temple covers an area of approximately 15,000 square meters. Currently, only the Arhat Hall and ten auxiliary rooms remain. The Arhat Hall features a raised-beam structure, a hip-and-gable roof, and deep eaves. It also retains architectural characteristics from the Liao Dynasty (the original structures included a mountain gate, Mahavira Hall, bell and drum towers, auxiliary rooms, as well as a west courtyard). The current Arhat Hall and ten auxiliary rooms are well-preserved. It is the only remaining temple building in Baodi District.
The existing Arhat Hall and ten auxiliary rooms are traditional Chinese brick-and-timber structures. In particular, the Arhat Hall has a single-eave hip-and-gable roof with deep overhanging eaves. Despite renovations during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it still retains architectural elements from the Liao Dynasty.
The layout of Dajue Temple follows a typical traditional temple arrangement. Originally, it included a mountain gate, Mahavira Hall, bell and drum towers, the Arhat Hall, and auxiliary rooms in the west courtyard. The beams and frames are characteristic of the Ming and Qing styles. The roofs have no ceiling decoration, featuring an "exposed rafter tails" design. The beam and bracket structures are exquisitely crafted, holding significant research value in the history of architecture.
Dajue Temple boasts rich cultural and historical significance. It served not only as a site for Buddhist activities but also as a place for the study and development of Buddhism, exerting widespread influence in society. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Dajue Temple was listed as one of the Eight Scenic Spots of Baodi—"Morning Bell at the Eastern Temple."
