Liuliao Ancient Town

Liuliao Ancient Town is a cultural tourism attraction.

Liuliao Ancient Town is located on the mountainside of Qingshan, west of Liuliao Town at the tip of the Liuliao Peninsula in Zhangpu County. The mountain rises abruptly from the beach, backed by the mainland and facing the sea, with Futou Bay and Jiuzhen Port to its side, surrounded by vast open space.

Liuliao Ancient Town was first built during the Yuan Dynasty. The walls of the town are entirely built with long stone slabs, 2–3 meters thick, following the natural topography and constructed on bedrock. The overall layout of the town is an irregular circular shape, slightly resembling a triangle, with a perimeter of 1,815 meters.

The walls are entirely constructed with long stone slabs, 2–3 meters thick, following the undulations of the mountain and built on natural bedrock. The town is built along the slopes, encircling the mountainside with a perimeter of 1,815 meters, a height of about 6 meters, and thickness ranging from 2 to 2.5 meters. It is made of granite slabs and has an irregular, roughly triangular circular shape, with the sea serving as a moat outside the walls. The town has three gates—southwest, south, and north—each with a rammed earth gate tower. There are also water gates, currently visible as five in total on the eastern and western sides, used for flood discharge and emergency purposes during wartime. Additionally, there are watchtowers and observation platforms. Among the giant rocks on the mountain within the town, there are stone inscriptions such as “Sea and Sky at a Glance” and “A Towering Lone Rock, Gazing Alone at Heaven Over the Water. The Great Land Heads Southeast, While Mountain Ranges Dare Not Approach.” These were inscribed by Ming Dynasty military commanders. Outside the northeast corner of the town lies a Ming Dynasty Guan Yu Temple. To the north of the town is the Ming Dynasty “Stele Commemorating Yu Dayou’s Achievements Against Japanese Pirates,” known as the *Xianbo Yu Gong Ze Ku Jing Hai Bei Ji*. Along the inner side of the walls, banyan trees are planted throughout.
