Cheben Village

As the central area of the Jinghepu Revolutionary Base, Cheben Village in Shiliu Town, Zhangpu County served as the headquarters of the Red Third Regiment, the 0Zhangzhou County Committee of the 0CPC, the 0Jinghepu County Committee of the 0CPC, the 0Jinghepu County Working Committee, one of the locations of the 0Min-Yue Border Provisional Special Committee, and one of the offices of the 0Southern Fujian Special Committee.

On April 20, 1932, the Eastern Route Army of the Central Red Army captured Zhangzhou. After listening to reports from Deng Zihui (who had been elected as an executive committee member and People's Commissar of Finance of the Provisional Central Government of the Chinese Soviet Republic) leading the establishment of the revolutionary base in Zhangpu, as well as Luo Ming, Secretary of the Fujian Provincial Committee, and Wang Haiping, Executive Committee member of the Fujian Soviet, Comrade Mao Zedong made the decision to consolidate and develop the rural revolutionary base centered around Longxi Market, Xiaoshancheng, and Longling in Zhangpu, expand guerrilla warfare southward into Zhangpu, Pinghe, Nanjing, Yunxiao, and Longxi counties, establish small Red Army units, and create small Soviet areas. He also sent a telegram regarding decisions on the revolutionary struggle in Southern Fujian. On April 22, during a meeting with company-level and higher officers of the Eastern Route Army, he delivered the report “On the Current Political Situation and the Second Campaign,” laying out plans to establish a new Soviet area centered in Longxi Market, Zhangpu, and expanding into five counties: Nanjing, Pinghe, Zhangpu, Longxi, and Yunxiao. On April 24, the Third Army of the Eastern Route Army of the Central Red Army captured Zhangpu, established the Zhangpu County Revolutionary Committee, and launched land revolution struggles such as overthrowing local tyrants, redistributing land, and establishing Soviet political power across urban and rural areas. Cheben Village became the central area of the Jinghepu Revolutionary Base, successively serving as the headquarters of the Red Third Regiment, the 0Zhangzhou County Committee of the 0CPC, the 0Jinghepu County Committee of the 0CPC, and one of the offices of the 0Min-Yue Border Provisional Special Committee during the period of the agrarian revolutionary struggle, as well as one of the offices of the 0Southern Fujian Special Committee during the Anti-Japanese War. Starting in the spring of 1948, it became the location of the 0Jinghepu County Working Committee.

The old house that housed the 0Jinghepu County Working Committee is a century-old earthen building covering an area of 180 square meters. Its walls, built with adobe, remain in a dangerous condition despite multiple renovations. In June 2004, the former site of the 0Jinghepu County Working Committee was designated as a Zhangpu County Cultural Relics Protection Unit by the Zhangpu County People’s Government. On January 28, 2013, it was announced as part of the Eighth Batch of Provincial-Level Cultural Relics Protection Units by the Fujian Provincial People’s Government.

Cheben Village: I. Overview of Cheben Village

Located in the northeastern mountainous area of Shiliu Town, Cheben Village is 30 kilometers from the town center. It is the most remote and highest-altitude (780 meters) administrative village in northwestern Zhangpu County. It governs one natural village and two villager groups, with a population of 432 people in 100 households and 23 official party members, including one female party member. The total land area of the village exceeds 20,000 mu, with actual cultivated land covering about 400 mu. This area was formerly known as the Jinghepu Border Region.
