Xingmin School

Xingmin School is located in Gegou Natural Village, Danjing Village, Changqiao Town, Zhangpu County.

After the failure of the Great Revolution in 1927, the Communists stationed in Zhangpu faithfully implemented the decisions of the Special Committee, relocated to rural areas, and continued to carry out the workers' and peasants' movement. Danjing Village is situated northeast of Zhangpu County, just over 10 kilometers from the county seat. It lies on the essential route to Zhangzhou and leads eastward toward Guansun Town. During the Great Revolution, this area witnessed vigorous peasant movement activities, resulting in a relatively solid foundation for the peasant association. In accordance with the Special Committee’s directives, the Communists in Zhangpu promptly moved to Danjing Village in Gegou, Changqiao, to advance the peasant movement. A group of Communists, including Li Lianxing — a member of the Minnan Special Committee and an executive committee member of the Fujian Provincial Provisional Committee — as well as Wang Zhanchun and Cai Yongfa, used the establishment of rural night schools as a cover to reorganize the peasant associations. They founded Xingmin School at the ancestral temple of the Chen family in Gegou, Danjing Village. Drawing on real-life rural content, they developed teaching materials and employed methods such as theatrical performances and teaching local folk songs to vividly expose the realities of class exploitation and oppression to the peasants, thereby awakening and raising their class consciousness. For instance, lines from the folk songs included: “The iron in the warlords’ hands, the blood on the workers’ and peasants’ necks,” and “Reaping rice in June is truly hard, sweat drips down our backs; the local tyrants and landlords forcibly collect rent — everyone, rise up against taxes and rent.” These messages were both easily understandable and reflective of rural realities, deeply resonating with the people and achieving excellent propaganda results. While reorganizing and developing the peasant associations, they also focused on identifying and training key members, recruiting activists into the Party, and established the Danjing Village Party Branch. This branch led the peasants from peaceful struggles to armed resistance against taxes and levies, making it one of the earliest rural Party branches and centers of peasant armed resistance in Zhangpu.

The former site of Xingmin School, the ancestral temple of the Chen family, has been recently renovated and protected with a memorial plaque, and is currently in good condition. In June 2004, Xingmin School was designated as a cultural relic protection unit of Zhangpu County by the Zhangpu County People's Government.
