Coastal Volcanic Geological Park

The Coastal Volcanic Geological Park is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

The Coastal Volcanic Geological Park is located along the coastal area from Qianting Town to Qianhu Bay, approximately 50 kilometers from Xiamen City, Zhangzhou City, and Zhangpu County. It is about 120 kilometers from both Quanzhou and Shantou. The transportation is convenient. On March 26, 2001, the Ministry of Land and Resources approved the Zhangzhou Coastal Volcanic National Geological Park as one of the first 11 national geological parks in China. The scenic area was invested in and developed by Zhangpu Sanxing Tourism Industry Development Co., Ltd., and officially opened on October 1, 2004. It is the largest, most well-preserved, and most distinctive coastal volcanic geological heritage site in China, and is exceptionally rare in the world. It has been listed by the provincial government as one of Fujian’s Top Ten Tourism Brands. In 2005, it was honored as one of “China’s Top Ten Most Beautiful Islands” in a selection initiated by Chinese National Geography magazine.

The Coastal Volcano is a typical example of Tertiary volcanic landforms, formed around 17 million years ago during the Himalayan movement when magma erupted through fractures trending northeast from deep within the Earth. The volcanic structures are exceptionally well-defined, reflecting the dramatic volcanic activity and geological evolution of the Cenozoic era in the Western Pacific. After prolonged geological evolution, it has ultimately formed the rare and spectacular landform seen today. The scenic area preserves central-type volcanic eruption structures as well as later weathering and marine erosion landforms. The main geological relics include four types: columnar basalt, ancient volcanic craters, volcanic fumarole groups, and the watermelon skin structure of basalt. The scenic area consists of “one mountain (Xiangshan), two islands (Linchin Islet and South Ding Islet), and three bays (Qisha Bay, Jiangkou Bay, and Houcai Bay).” It features a large number of unique volcanic landform wonders, which hold significant scientific research value in geotectonics, volcanology, paleogeography, seismology, and geodynamics. The planned development area of the scenic zone is 3.5 square kilometers, to be implemented in three phases, aiming to become a comprehensive tourism destination integrating geological heritage conservation, scientific research and education, international conferences, sightseeing, maritime sports, coastal tourism, leisure vacations, and health and wellness. The second phase of the project is currently under preparation, with a planned land area of 3,000 acres, primarily located from Qisha Bay and Jiangkou Bay to Houcai Bay. Major projects include a star-rated volcano hotel, an international tourism resort, the “Sea Rhythm” sanatorium, a volcanic geology museum, a volcanic culture street, the Cross-Strait International Conference Center (including a five-star hotel), a volcanic dynamic plaza, a sailing club, a coastal tourism boulevard, and other supporting service facilities.

Qisha Village: Qisha Village is located in the eastern part of Zhangpu County and marks the boundary between the East China Sea and the South China Sea. It is also the first village along Zhangpu County’s coastline where the East China Sea meets the South China Sea. To the east, it borders Baotang Village of Longhai City's Longjiao She Ethnic Township across a small hill; to the north, it neighbors Tianzhongyang Village; and to the west and south, it faces Jiangkou Bay, which serves as a natural harbor. There is a town-managed shrimp farming area of 10,000 mu (approximately 667 hectares), with the management office located within Qisha Village. To the south lies Xiangshan, where, in 2001, foreign investment was introduced to develop the Zhangzhou Coastal Volcanic National Geological Park at Xiangshan.
