Former Site of the Establishment of the Communist Party of China Zhangpu County Committee

The former site of the establishment of the Communist Party of China Zhangpu County Committee is a cultural relic protection unit of Zhangpu County, a classic red tourism attraction, and a base for patriotic education.

The former site of the establishment of the Communist Party of China Zhangpu County Committee is located at Maping Central School in An’zi Natural Village, Houkang Village, Maping Town, Zhangpu County.

After the failure of the Great Revolution, a group of CPC members from Zhangpu, including Li Lianxing and Chen Yuanzai, used Maping Yucui School in Houkang Village, Maping Town as a cover for teaching. They promoted revolutionary ideals, reorganized peasant associations, recruited farmers into the Party, and established Party branches. On January 10, 1928, under the leadership of CPC members, the Maping Peasant Association launched an armed resistance—the anti-tax campaign—against the 11th Army of the Kuomintang, marking the beginning of armed resistance by Fujian peasants against the new Kuomintang warlords. The peasants were suppressed, with several killed or injured. After the tragedy, the Provisional Provincial Committee of the CPC Fujian sent a letter to the Zhangpu Party organization. Following the directive from the Provincial Committee, Party branches were subsequently established in Dakeng, Danjing, Maping, and Guanshun. On this basis, in the spring of 1928, under the guidance of a representative sent by the Provisional Provincial Committee of the CPC Fujian, the Provisional CPC Zhangpu County Committee was established at Maping Central School. In March, the formal CPC Zhangpu County Committee was established, leading armed resistance by various local peasant associations in Zhangpu, and driving the 11th Army out of southern Fujian.

Maping Central School, the former site of the establishment of the CPC Zhangpu County Committee, was designated as a cultural relic protection unit of Zhangpu County by the Zhangpu County People’s Government in June 2004, and as a patriotic education base of Zhangpu County by the CPC Zhangpu County Committee and Zhangpu County People’s Government in May 2001.

It borders Baishui Town of Longhai City to the north, Qianting Town and Bai Zhu Lake Farm to the east, Fotan Town to the south, and Chiling Township to the west. Surrounded by mountains on all sides, it earned the name “Maping” from “Ma Shan” (Horse Mountain) and “Da Ping Ling” (Big Flat Ridge). The town covers a land area of 5,225 square kilometers and governs six administrative villages and one town-run farm. It has a total of 4,297 households and a population of 17,724, with arable land area of 2 (unit unclear) and mountainous land of 330,000 mu.
