The Site of the Weigoukou Ambush Battle during the Huaihai Campaign is a cultural relic protection unit of Fuyang City, a classic red tourism attraction, and a patriotic education base.

In November 1948, after the Huaihai Campaign began, the East China Field Army surrounded the Nationalist Huang Baitao Corps, leaving the Nationalist forces in Xuzhou in a dilemma. The Liu Ruming and Li Yannian corps moved north to reinforce but were stopped head-on by our army at the Huaihai battlefield. Chiang Kai-shek urgently ordered the Huang Wei Corps to quickly advance from western Henan to the Xuzhou–Bengbu line, planning to meet up with the Li Yannian and Liu Ruming corps in the south, relieve the siege of Xuzhou in the north, and rescue the Huang Baitao Corps in the east.

From the afternoon of November 14 to November 18, the Huang Wei Corps encountered stubborn resistance from a company of the Second Battalion of the Independent Brigade (commonly known as the Old Third Regiment) of the Henan–Anhui–Jiangsu Military District, which was part of the PLA garrison force, near the Yinghe River crossing in Fuyang. Intense fighting ensued. By the early hours of November 18, the corps had fully withdrawn, and our army completed its blocking mission, voluntarily retreating from the eastern bank of the Yinghe. The successful defense at the Fuyang crossing delayed the Huang Wei Corps from reaching the Huaihai area, thwarting Chiang Kai-shek’s plan. Not only was the Huang Baitao Corps completely annihilated on November 22, but on the same day, the Huang Wei Corps’ headquarters, four armies, and one fast-moving column—totaling 120,000 troops—were also completely wiped out at Shuangduiji in Mengcheng.

On April 4, 2008, Qingming Festival, the People’s Heroes Monument of the Yinghe Ambush Battle, funded and donated by Chen Guang’an, a farmer photographer from Fuyang City, was unveiled at Weigou Sluice in Yuanzhai Town, Yingdong District. The monument stands 2 zhang 8 chi (approximately 9.3 meters) tall, symbolizing the 28 martyrs who sacrificed their lives.

It administers 26 village (residential) committees, 160 natural villages, 381 villager groups, 13,776 households, and a total population of 62,000, including 59,000 agricultural residents. The town has over 40,000 mu of arable land.

The town enjoys a superior geographical location, bordered by the Yinghe River to the south. It is traversed by the Fukou Highway, the Fuyang–Huainan Railway, and the Jihé River, offering convenient transportation. The soil types include sandy soil, silt soil, and black soil, all of which are fertile.
