Wei Family Ancient Mound Site

The Wei Family Ancient Mound Site is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Anhui Province.

The Wei Family Ancient Mound Site is located in Weiying Village Group, Panggang Village, Shiyuan Township, Tianjia’an District, Huainan City, Anhui Province.

The site is an irregular platform that rises 3.6 meters above the ground surface, covering an area of nearly 20,000 square meters, and is currently used as farmland. Pottery fragments from early periods can be found on the surface, mainly consisting of sand-tempered red pottery, clay red pottery, sand-tempered gray pottery, and clay gray pottery, along with a small amount of engraved pottery with thunder patterns. In addition, a small number of Han Dynasty brick, tile, and stone fragments have also been discovered. On the western side of the site, a section was formed due to soil excavation in earlier years, where a dense layer of snail shells was found 1.6 meters below the surface of the mound. Based on the pottery samples and animal bones collected from the site, it exhibits typical characteristics of early cultures in the Huai River basin. The site remains relatively intact, with abundant surface remains and cultural layers dating from the Neolithic Age through the Shang and Zhou Dynasties to the Han Dynasty. It holds significant importance for studying the distribution of prehistoric and pre-Qin sites in the middle and lower reaches of the Huai River, as well as the content, characteristics, and developmental progress of Huaiyi culture and civilization.
