The South Canal originates in Linqing County, Shandong Province, flows through Dezhou, then through Dongguang, Bozhen, Cangxian, and Qingxian in Hebei Province before entering Jinghai County in Tianjin. It then passes through Yangliuqing in Xiqing District into Hongqiao District, flowing through the southern part of Hongqiao District to Sanchahekou where it meets the North Canal and flows into the Haihe River. The total length is 509 kilometers, with the section within Hongqiao District being about 7.3 kilometers long and 20–40 meters wide. Within Hongqiao District, it flows from west to east through Gongzhuang, Xiaoxiguan, Nantouyao, Xianchunyuan, Dahuo Lane, Hebei Avenue, Santiaoshi, Da Hutong, and other areas, with its western end opposite the boundary of Nankai District. The area along the canal is mostly residential. The south bank of the eastern section features the site of the “Red Lantern Huanglian Holy Mother Docking Site.” The Sanchahekou area is one of the earliest developed regions in Tianjin, where the “Luanhe–Tianjin Water Diversion Project Monument” has been erected. The canal is spanned by bridges including Miyun Bridge, Xianyang Bridge, Jieyuan Bridge, Gongzhuang Sluice Bridge, Jinggangshan Bridge, Dafeng Bridge, Tuanjie Bridge, Aimin Bridge, Jinhua Bridge, and Jinzhong Bridge.

The South Canal is part of the world’s earliest and longest man-made waterway—the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal—and is also the main section of the Grand Canal in North China. During the Yongle era of the Ming Dynasty, when grain transport flourished, the South Canal historically served as a vital waterway to Beijing. The busy grain transport and shipping activities along the South Canal attracted large populations to settle along its banks, and this population concentration made Sanchahekou one of the birthplaces of Tianjin’s urban development and its earliest commercial, cultural, and entertainment district.

Historically, the South Canal played a significant role in the formation of Tianjin as a city, the development of its commerce and culture, and its rise as a major northern metropolis and economic trade center. It holds high historical value.
