Tianjin Da Hu Tong Commercial Area

Originally known as Guyi Street, stretching over 700 meters, this area was located outside the old Jiumen Gate of Tianjin. It was one of the city’s early commercial districts, where many second-hand clothing businesses gathered, such as Chengtai Used Clothing Store and Wensheng Used Clothing Store. At the same time, it also hosted numerous tailor shops, both large and small, that specialized in making and altering clothes. As a result, many visitors from other parts of China would come specifically to Tianjin to shop here for both new and used clothing. By the 1920s, Guyi Street had reached its peak development and became known as a “silver nest.” Industries such as silk, satin, woolen fabrics, and furs successively moved into Guyi Street and quickly became dominant. At that time, 12 of Tianjin’s most famous large silk and satin shops were located on Guyi Street, with eight of them situated there. “In Tianjin, among the merchants, Guyi Street was the place of great prosperity,” describes the scene back then. Now, what was once Guyi Street has gradually evolved into the larger Da Hu Tong commercial district, forming the most important commodity distribution hub in northern China. It recreates the commercial charm of Tianjin’s birthplace of commerce and the historic Guyi Street, establishing a development framework of “a city within a city, a market within a market.”
