Lion City served as a county seat for 1,339 years before being submerged in 1959 due to the impoundment of the Xin’an River Reservoir, making it a truly millennium-old underwater ancient city.

In ancient times, people cherished the Eight Scenic Spots of Lion City, but now the traces of the ancient city have sunk beneath the lake and are hard to find. Beneath the blue waves, the sleeping ancient city softly sings of the changes over time; above the green waters, a reborn town is painting a picture of rapid transformation...

Wen Yuan Lion City is situated in the town center of the scenic Jiangjia Town and is China’s first intangible cultural heritage lifestyle experience base. It recreates the original appearance of the thousand-year-old underwater Lion City, reviving 1,400 years of civilization from the submerged ancient Lion City. Using revitalization as its main approach, it brings traditional handicrafts, intangible cultural heritage projects, folk customs, and festive cultural elements to life by integrating them into everyday settings and scenes. Within the Wen Yuan Lion City scenic area, there is not only the once most bustling East Main Street and North Main Street, but also the North Main Street features seven reconstructed archways from the ancient Lion City, including the famous Yao Family Archway, the Merit Archway, and the Chastity Archway. This unique Archway Street has become a real-life museum showcasing the culture of archways in southern China.
