Yan Ziling Fishing Terrace

Yan Ziling Fishing Terrace is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction and a cultural relic protection unit of Zhejiang Province.

Yan Ziling Fishing Terrace is located on Gongchun Mountain on the northern bank of the Fuchun River, about 15 kilometers west of Tonglu. It is said to be the spot where Yan Guang (courtesy name Ziling), a recluse of the Eastern Han Dynasty, lived in seclusion and fished, hence it is also called Yanling Mountain. The terrace is about 70 meters high and consists of two parts, eastern and western, over 80 meters apart, both situated on mid-slope bedrocks. The eastern terrace is where Yan is believed to have fished. There is a huge stone resembling a bamboo shoot, which legend says was used by Yan to prop his fishing rod. The stone pavilion was built during the Qianlong era and has a very rustic charm. From here, one can gaze at the green mountains embracing the spring-like river, as if in a painting. The western terrace is also known as Xie Ao Terrace. Xie Ao, a loyalist remnant of the Southern Song Dynasty, wept facing north here in mourning for the patriotic hero Wen Tianxiang. On the western side along the river, a new Temple of Mr. Yan has been built. Inside the temple stands a stone stele inscribed with the “Record of the Temple of Mr. Yan” written by Fan Zhongyan of the Song Dynasty. The famous line from the text, “The mountains are vast and blue, the river vast and deep; the virtue of the Master reaches as high as the mountains and flows as long as the waters,” has been passed down to this day.

Transportation: Take a minibus from Tonglu to Fuchunjiang Town. The fare is 3 RMB, and it takes about half an hour to arrive. After getting off, walk for another ten minutes or so to reach the cruise ship dock.

It borders Pujiang and Jiande to the southwest and connects to Tonglu Town, the county seat, to the north. It is 90 kilometers from Hangzhou. It is an emerging industrial tourism town on the golden tourist route of the national scenic areas of the Fuchun River, Xin’an River, and Qiandao Lake. The town covers a total area of 200 square kilometers, with a population of 32,000. It governs 15 administrative villages and 9 residential areas. Within its jurisdiction, there are five provincial- or ministerial-level institutions, including the Fuchunjiang Power Plant, Fuchunjiang Hydropower Equipment General Factory, the 12th Bureau Fuchunjiang Management Office, and Fuchunjiang Hydropower Workers’ University.
