Tongjun Mountain

Known as the “Sacred Land of the Medicine Ancestor,” Tongjun Mountain is located at the confluence of the Fenshui River and the Tong River in Fenshui County, Zhejiang Province, facing the county town of Tonglu across the water. With two rivers forming a ribbon-like embrace and a solitary peak rising abruptly, it looks like an emerald jade floating on the water, hence earning the nicknames “Little Golden Mountain” and “Floating Jade Mountain.” Lush with ancient trees, Tongjun Mountain serves as the gateway to Tonglu. Shaped like a coiled green snail, it stands just 60 meters high. Viewed from the county’s waterfront along the Tianmu Stream, the mountain resembles a graceful maiden with a faintly visible silhouette; while if you take a small boat and look up from Tongjun Pool at the mountain’s base, the craggy rocks and dense ancient woods give Tongjun Mountain the appearance of an ethereal old sage, exuding an air of mystery.

Tongjun Mountain is covered in lush greenery and boasts beautiful scenery. Halfway up the mountain stands the “Phoenix Pavilion.” From its vantage point, you can see Phoenix Mountain stretching out as if dancing, seamlessly connecting with the ridges of Tongjun Mountain. In the 1930s, a road was built that cut through the connection, leaving Tongjun Mountain standing alone by the river. At the mountain’s summit is the “Four-Direction Pavilion.” Leaning on its railing and looking down, you’ll see a deep abyss below; to the west lies the far end of the Fuchun River, where twin peaks stand tall and the misty scenery of Qili Gorge unfolds; to the southeast, layered mountains and undulating blue-green ridges stretch out, with the Tianmu Stream winding through the hills, and Fangma Islet coming into full view. As the saying goes: “Where the Qiantang River ends, Tonglu County begins — its green waters and blue mountains surpass the finest paintings.” The mountain also features historic sites such as the Tongjun Shrine, Tongjun Pagoda, Jingxiu Pavilion, and Jiangtian Jimu Pavilion. Descending eastward from Jiangtian Jimu Pavilion, you’ll find yourself above cliffs and deep pools.

Due to its varying beauty when viewed from different angles and distances, the Qing Dynasty scholar Liang Qichao called it the “Corner of Mount Emei,” while Kang Youwei praised it as surpassing the peaks of Mount Emei in wonder. Today, Tongjun Mountain has become even more strikingly scenic, making it one of the popular tourist destinations along the Fuchun River in Tonglu.
