Tianlong Nine Waterfalls

The Tianlong Nine Waterfalls scenic area is located in the southeastern part of Tonglu County, at the junction of Pujiang, Zhuji, and Fuyang counties (cities). It is 80 kilometers from Hangzhou and 30 kilometers from downtown Tonglu, situated to the east of Xueshuiling, the home of China’s renowned Snow Water Cloud Green tea. This was also the headquarters of the Jin-Xiao Detachment of the East China Field Army of the Chinese People's Liberation Army. It is also a patriotic education base of Hangzhou City.

According to ancient texts: “Amid towering mountains and steep ridges, rarely trodden by humans across hundreds of miles, there resides the Dragon King who governs the waters.” Later generations built a temple to worship him, praying for rainfall. Within these majestic mountains and forests, lush greenery thrives, and streams cascade down the rugged cliffs, forming nine pools and nine waterfalls, each with drops of dozens of meters. This is the largest waterfall cluster in Tonglu County. Some of the falls twist through rocks and cliffs in serene seclusion, while others plunge like silver rivers from the sky, roaring like thunder—offering visitors breathtaking natural wonders. Above the cliffside waterfalls, meandering streams wind through the valley where birds sing in the lush, pristine forest, creating a natural oxygen bar. The continuous mountain ranges, flowing streams, and quiet valleys also make it an ideal spot for exploration and stream tracing.

There is also a touching legend about the Tianlong Nine Waterfalls. Originally, there were no dragons in the Snow Water Dragon Pool. It wasn’t until the early Tang Dynasty that an old man and woman from Shandong appeared in a dream to the Chancellor Wei Zheng. They accused the Jing River Dragon King of withholding rainfall while distributing rain in the Hebei and Shandong regions, leaving the drought unresolved, and asked Wei Zheng to uphold justice. Upon hearing this, Wei Zheng was furious about the Jing River Dragon King’s actions. He drew his sword and set out to confront the dragon. Hearing the news, the Jing River Dragon King quickly fled with his nine dragon sons, riding the wind. One day, they arrived at the Snow Water Dragon Spring Summit, where they saw a clear spring gushing out from the mountainside, leaping down nine levels to form nine natural pools. Surrounded by overlapping mountains and untouched wilderness, the tranquil environment seemed perfect for settling down. They decided to stay. The old dragon king told his dragon sons to learn from their mistakes, live peacefully, do good deeds, and lead a virtuous life.
