Jiayin Garden

Jiayin Garden is a cultural heritage conservation unit of Zhejiang Province.

Jiayin Garden, located on the north bank of Houxi Creek in Yujia Natural Village, Yu Zhao Village, Fuchunjiang Town, was built in 1922 and completed in 1924. It got its name from the inscription “Jiayin Garden” by Kang Youwei.

Upon arriving at the main gate of Jiayin Garden, you’ll see six characters carved above: “Fishing Hills and Woodcutter’s Streams Cottage.” For preservation purposes, you cannot enter through the main gate; instead, you have to turn and enter the garden through the third side gate.

The entire compound covers an area of over 1,900 square meters and consists of the main building “Fishing Hills and Woodcutter’s Streams Cottage,” the old house, and a row of bungalows behind the house. The main building, “Fishing Hills and Woodcutter’s Streams Cottage,” is a relatively typical example of Sino-Western architectural fusion, covering 949.2 square meters with five bays and three courtyards. Today, apart from the main building, the other old houses and bungalows have collapsed.

The main building of Jiayin Garden features high walls on all sides, an inward-curving roof, and a hip-and-gable roof with a unique shape. From the outside, it displays white walls and black tiles, with clear characteristics of Western-style Roman columns and moldings. On both sides of the front gate, there are two large blue stone flower vats carved in the Ming Dynasty. The overall design concept of the building reflects a distinctive style that combines Chinese and Western architectural cultures.

The upper parts of the high walls are adorned with Roman-style decorative patterns under the eaves, and the four corners of the wall feature protruding short lotus columns. The main house has five bays and three courtyards, with a keel-vaulted corridor in the front hall. Each round column features exquisitely carved wooden figures and floral-bird motifs known as “ox-legs,” all vivid and lifelike.

On January 7, 2011, it was announced as part of the sixth batch of Zhejiang Provincial Cultural Heritage Conservation Units.
