Former Site of Liji Medical School

The former site of Liji Medical School is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The former site of Liji Medical School is located at No. 10 Gongyuan Road, Yuhai Subdistrict Office, Rui’an City. Established in the 11th year of the Guangxu reign during the Qing Dynasty (1885), it was a modern-style traditional Chinese medical school founded by Chen Qiu, Chen Jieshi, Chen Baoshan, He Diqi, and others to promote reformist and progressive ideals. Over the course of eighteen to nineteen years, the school trained over three hundred outstanding traditional Chinese medicine practitioners and had an outstanding impact on the advancement of the TCM profession.

Liji Medical School was China’s first modern-style traditional Chinese medicine institution to adopt Western educational systems and methods. It integrated teaching, medical practice, and research. In 1896, the school launched its academic journal, the Liji Medical School Journal, which served as a platform for faculty and students to advocate reform and innovation and to engage in medical discourse. The journal was distributed across major cities in China as well as in Hong Kong and Macau, garnering widespread attention from all sectors.
