Tao Shan Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Hall

The Tao Shan Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Hall is a classic site of red tourism.

From 1926 to 1927, peasant associations were established across Tao Shan, launching revolutionary struggles. In 1928, the Northern District Committee of the Chinese Communist Party was formed in Tao Shan. That year, peasant movements surged throughout the region, staging protests against famine and opposing land registration campaigns. In June 1928, armed uprisings involving peasants from Yong, Rui, and Ping counties took place, with Tao Shan’s peasant forces actively participating. In 1929, a peasant Red Guards unit was established in Tao Shan, which merged the following year with the Red Guards of Huling area to form the Northern District Guerrilla Unit. In May 1930, hundreds of Northern District guerrillas voluntarily went to Yongjia to join the First Regiment of the 13th Red Army. Soon after, the 13th Red Army attacked Pingyang County, passing through Tao Shan and, with the support of the Northern District guerrillas, stormed the Nationalist police station there. On July 16 of the same year, the Zhejiang South Special Committee of the CCP and the 13th Red Army held a massive anti-warlord rally in Tao Shan attended by ten thousand people. In 1937, the Provisional Provincial Committee of the CCP for Fujian-Zhejiang Border Regions moved into Shamen Mountain and Ding’ao Mountain in Tao Shan, reviving party activities there. During the Anti-Japanese War and the Liberation War, Tao Shan’s party organizations played a vital role on the front lines of the revolution, making significant contributions in areas such as party operations, communication, and intelligence. Throughout this long struggle, the Party members and revolutionary masses of Tao Shan made great sacrifices for the revolutionary cause.

The Tao Shan Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Hall is located on a northern peninsula within the Tongxi Scenic Area, Tongxi Village, Tongpu Township, Ruian City. Its construction began in 1994, and it was completed and opened to the public in October 1996. The memorial covers an area of 1,000 square meters, with a building area of 300 square meters. The main structures consist of a memorial monument and an exhibition hall. The 150-square-meter exhibition hall displays photographic materials, historical relics, and belongings of martyrs.

The Tao Shan Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Hall is a patriotic education base in Ruian City.
