Former Residence of Chen Zhuoru

The Former Residence of Chen Zhuoru is a cultural tourism attraction.

Chen Zhuoru (1904–1932), originally named Shunsheng, also known as Zhuoru or Zhuoruo, was from Tuoshan Village, East District, Rui’an. In 1924, he enrolled in the Tenth Provincial Normal School of Wenzhou, joined the Communist Youth League in Wenzhou in 1925, and became a member of the Communist Party of China the following year, serving as a key member of the Wenzhou Independent Branch of the CPC. After the “April 12th” coup in 1927, he returned to his hometown Tuoshan to continue revolutionary activities. In the spring of 1928, he organized the Tuoshan Peasant Red Guards, personally raised funds to purchase weapons and make military uniforms to arm the guards, and launched armed struggle. In June 1929, he was appointed as a member of the Rui’an County Committee of the CPC. In May 1930, he became captain of the Rui’an Red Army Guerrilla Unit, leading 500 guerrillas to Yongjia where they were integrated into the First Regiment of the 13th Red Army. He participated in battles including the capture of Pingyang, the seizure of Limo, the taking of Jinyun, the occupation of Ouqu, and the control of Wuyan. In early 1932, as the 13th Red Army suffered continuous setbacks and the revolutionary movement in southern Zhejiang waned, he went to Pingyang to reconnect with veteran Communists such as Ye Tingpeng to re-establish the party organization and the Red Army guerrilla unit in southern Zhejiang. At the end of February the same year, he returned to his hometown to arrange arms purchases but was betrayed by a traitor, arrested the next day, and later executed.

The Former Residence of Chen Zhuoru is located in Tuoshan Village, Luofeng Subdistrict, Tangxia Town, Rui’an City. In 2003, initiated by the Tangxia Town Party Committee and government, over 800,000 yuan was raised through voluntary contributions from Party members, corporate sponsorships, and government subsidies to renovate the severely dilapidated and uninhabited former Chen family residence into the Former Residence of Chen Zhuoru. It was completed in 2004. Covering an area of approximately 800 square meters with a built-up area of about 700 square meters, the main structure consists of 20 rooms arranged in a rectangular block, with a central open space of 100 square meters for visitors. The residence displays exhibits on the life and deeds of the martyr Chen Zhuoru.
