Former Site of the Meishan Guerrilla Base and the 8th Expanded Meeting of the CPC Southern Zhejiang Special Committee

The Former Site of the Meishan Guerrilla Base and the 8th Expanded Meeting of the CPC Southern Zhejiang Special Committee is a classic red tourism attraction.

Meishan in the western mountainous area of Rui’an, with an altitude of over 900 meters, is home to natural villages such as Yeliao, Xiexieping, Ger, Kenggen, Changwan, Maotian, Waichang, Dichang, Yeliaochang, Shuiduikeng, and Hengkeng. These villages, along with neighboring areas such as Dadangkeng and Lishan near Meishan, were collectively referred to as the Meishan region (i.e., the Meishan guerrilla zone). Between 1935 and 1937, the Red Army’s Advance Column passed through or stationed in Meishan multiple times while traveling between southern and southwestern Zhejiang, and on several occasions left detachments behind in Meishan to tend to the wounded, carry out guerrilla activities, and establish a base. In May 1940, the Pingyang County Committee of the CPC dispatched personnel to establish a communication liaison station and develop party organizations in Changwan, Meishan. Starting in February 1942, the Pingyang County Committee relocated its headquarters to Meishan. In late February, Long Yue, Secretary of the Southern Zhejiang Special Committee, presided over an emergency meeting in Changwan, Meishan, to discuss how to sustain the struggle in Southern Zhejiang under the severe circumstances of the arrest of Provincial Party Committee Secretary Liu Ying and the destruction of the provincial committee headquarters—this meeting is historically known as the “Meishan Emergency Meeting.” In April 1944, the Southern Zhejiang Special Committee moved back to Rui’an from the Qing-Jing-Li area, with Changwan, Meishan, serving as one of its regular bases. In July 1947, the Southern Zhejiang Special Committee established a directly affiliated district (also called the Meishan District) in Changwan, Meishan. From October 3 to 29, 1947, Long Yue presided over the 8th Expanded Meeting of the Southern Zhejiang Special Committee in Changwan, Meishan. The meeting reviewed the work and armed struggle experiences of the past year, and made plans for future tasks, base construction, and the establishment of the Southern Zhejiang Guerrilla Column.

The site of the Meishan Guerrilla Base is located in Meishan Village, Dongyan Township, Rui’an City, 10 kilometers from the seat of Dongyan Township government and 50 kilometers from downtown Rui’an. The former site of the 8th Expanded Meeting of the Southern Zhejiang Special Committee (also known as the site of the “Meishan Emergency Meeting”) is situated in Changwan Natural Village, Meishan Village, approximately 8 kilometers from the seat of Dongyan Township government and about 60 kilometers from downtown Rui’an. The main structure of this meeting site consists of seven rooms (25 meters wide and 10 meters deep) and two wing rooms (6 meters wide and 10 meters deep). Both the main rooms and wing rooms are two-story wooden buildings, with a total floor area of 600 square meters. The front courtyard spans about 200 square meters, making the total site area around 500 square meters.
