Former Site of the Fujian-Zhejiang Border Temporary Provincial Party Committee Headquarters at Fuquan Temple

The former site of the Fujian-Zhejiang Border Temporary Provincial Party Committee Headquarters at Fuquan Temple is a cultural tourism attraction.

In February 1937, the Red Army Advance Detachment stationed in Fengwen, Taishun County, was surrounded by the Kuomintang forces. Political Commissar Liu Ying and Commander Su Yu led their troops in a counterattack and eventually broke through the encirclement. Thereafter, Su Yu led the main force to the southwestern part of Zhejiang, while Liu Ying took the Fujian-Zhejiang Border Temporary Provincial Party Committee headquarters and the guard squad to the Rui (An) - Ping (Yang) border area. In April of that year, Liu Ying and others arrived at Shamenshan in Taoshan, Rui’an, where they were received by Chi Xinhua, the abbot of Fuquan Temple on Shamenshan. Inside the temple, Liu Ying wrote three slogans on a screen and wooden panel, including “Cease the Civil War and Unite to Resist Japan,” expressing his urgent desire for patriotic resistance against Japan. He established the temporary provincial committee at Shamenshan and subsequently sent personnel to establish bases in Wuyunshan, Zhishan, and Ding’aoshan in Rui’an. In the eastern part of Rui’an, Zhaoiping??, Liu Ying personally restored the Zhaoiping?? branch. In August of the same year, a peace agreement was reached between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party in Zhejiang, and Liu Ying led the temporary provincial committee headquarters to leave the Shamenshan base.

The former site of the Fujian-Zhejiang Border Temporary Provincial Party Committee Headquarters at Fuquan Temple is located at Fuquan Temple on Shamenshan in Taoshan, Rui’an City, 12 kilometers from the seat of the Taoshan Town government and about 30 kilometers from downtown Rui’an. Fuquan Temple sits at an altitude of 500 meters, covers an area of approximately 2,000 square meters, and was initially built during the Southern Dynasties. It was rebuilt in the 19th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty and served as a Taoist activity site. In 1958, it was occupied by the Fuquan Forest Farm. In 2008, it was restored as a Taoist activity site and underwent renovation. The temple displays photographic materials and other exhibits related to the activities of the Fujian-Zhejiang Border Temporary Provincial Party Committee at Fuquan Temple.

The former site of the Fujian-Zhejiang Border Temporary Provincial Party Committee headquarters at Fuquan Temple is a cultural relic protection unit of Rui’an City.
