The Concentration Site of the First Great Uprising of Xianjiang Farmers

In June 1928, a joint armed uprising of farmers took place in Yongjia, Rui’an, and Pingyang counties. The Rui’an County Committee of the Communist Party of China mobilized armed farmers from the eastern, southern, and northern districts to attack Rui’an County Town. On the 26th, Lin Zhizhai, head of the Southern District Committee of the CPC, along with others, gathered around 500 armed farmers from the southern district (mainly from Xianjiang) at Bao’ning Temple to hold a mobilization meeting for the attack on the county town. After the meeting, the farmers were highly motivated and surged toward Shanghe Village in Zhouchang, burning down the mansions of landlords. The following night, about 600 armed farmers from the southern district boarded 16 large wooden boats and traveled downstream along the Feiyun River to arrive at Jiaoshi. Due to heavy rain, rising tides, and the absence of an attack signal from the county town, the armed farmers returned to Xianjiang. On their way home, the district committee leaders Lin Zhizhai, Lin Zhenfu, and Chen Lanping were captured and killed.

The Concentration Site of the First Great Uprising of Xianjiang Farmers is located at Bao’ning Temple in Taotou Village, Xianjiang Town, Rui’an City, approximately 10 kilometers from downtown Rui’an. Bao’ning Temple was built during the Ming and Qing dynasties and served as a site for Buddhist activities. In 1982, the local government erected a monument commemorating the First Great Uprising of Xianjiang Farmers.

Bao’ning Temple, the Concentration Site of the First Great Uprising of Xianjiang Farmers, is a cultural relic protection unit of Rui’an City.
