Daping Site

The Daping Site is a protected cultural heritage site of Zhejiang Province.

The Daping Site is located at the northern foot of Beilong Mountain in Da'ao Village, Beilong Township, Rui'an City, Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province. Beilong Township is situated on an island outside the mouth of the Feiyun River. Discovered during a cultural relics survey in November 1983, the site covers an area of approximately 7,000 square meters and is elongated in shape. Artifacts found at the site include pottery and stone tools. The pottery includes clay charcoal-tempered pottery, clay sand-tempered pottery, clay gray pottery and yellow pottery, as well as stamped hard pottery. The clay charcoal-tempered pottery has a loose texture and crumbles easily when squeezed; it contains a layer of carbon crystal particles in the middle, resulting from the mixing of crushed plant stems and other materials. The coarse sand-tempered pottery has a reddish-yellow body with a blackened surface, a rough texture, no patterns, and a high content of sand particles, giving it a loose structure. Stamped hard pottery is the most common type, characterized by its hardness and decorated with patterns such as stripes, meanders, thundercloud motifs, and lozenge grids. Stone tools include adzes, spears, and chisels. The stone adzes were only roughly polished, have a trapezoidal cross-section, and are relatively numerous; the stone spears and chisels are more finely worked.
