Dong'an Dong Bridge

Dong'an Dong Bridge is a cultural relic protection unit of Zhejiang Province.

Dong'an Dong Bridge is located on Fenghu Street in Rui'an, Zhejiang. Originally built during the Song Dynasty, it was reconstructed in the early Ming Dynasty and renovated in the fifth year of the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1740). It remains well-preserved to this day. The bridge is a single-arch granite structure with a span of 19.21 meters, a clear span of 4.53 meters, and a width of 21.58 meters, constructed using the method of longitudinal jointing with segmented parallel courses. The bridge deck is home to the Fenghu Pavilion and the Guangji Temple. The pavilion is three bays wide and one bay deep; the temple has two courtyards, with the main hall being five bays wide and a stage built in front of the central bay, all being late Qing Dynasty wooden structures.

Dong Bridge is a well-known and beloved historic site among the local people of Rui'an. It is not only admired for its unique architectural style, but also frequented for its multifunctional leisure offerings, and particularly noted for its beautiful and mysterious folk legends.

Legend has it that long, long ago, Rui'an City suffered from frequent fires, bringing great suffering to its residents. When the east wind blew, the fires would rage even more fiercely and were difficult to extinguish. A feng shui master explained: “This is all because of the Dong Bridge outside the eastern gate. When the sun rises in the east in the early morning, its rays shine directly onto the bridge, creating a focal point that becomes the source of the fire. Moreover, when the east wind blows across the round bridge, it’s as if the heavens are fanning the kitchen stove with a fire poker, making the flames burn even more intensely. To put out the fires, the Dong Bridge must be blocked.” So the local people came up with a solution: they drove piles and piled up earth in the middle of the wide Tang River outside the eastern gate to build a Gongrui Mountain, then constructed the Yuwell Temple on the mountain to govern water and fire. The surroundings of the temple were planted with lush trees to block the east wind. From then on, the fires in the city suddenly ceased. In this way, the local people cloaked the Dong Bridge and Gongrui Mountain in an air of mystery, elevating them to become a beautiful scenic highlight of Rui'an City.
