Former Residence of Jiang Youshan

The former residence of Jiang Youshan is located at No. 27 Dongmen Street, Haidong Village, Haian Office, Tangxia Town, Rui’an City. It is a late Qing Dynasty building facing south with its back to the north. The surviving structure consists of a gate tower, front courtyard, main house, rear courtyard, and two wing rooms, covering a total area of nearly 800 square meters.

The building is constructed with a hybrid Chinese-Western brick-and-wood style. Although the floor structure has been altered, the overall layout remains clear. The first-floor structure is largely intact, showcasing typical architectural features of the modern Wenzhou-Rui’an Plain region. It is designated as a cultural heritage conservation site in Rui’an City.

The original structure of Jiang Youshan’s residence had three axes running from north to south. The surviving part is the central axis. Along the central axis, four three-bay two-story traditional Chinese wooden buildings were originally constructed at each corner of the main house. A courtyard was situated between the northern and southern buildings (outside the gables on both sides of the main house), thus forming two additional lateral axes. Today, only one two-story Chinese wooden building at the northwest corner remains fully preserved.

Jiang Youshan (1885–1953), originally named Jiao with the courtesy name Yanshen, later changed his courtesy name to Youshan, by which he became commonly known. He was a native of Haian, Rui’an. His father, Zhu (courtesy name Xingshan), was a tribute student in the late Qing Dynasty and was well known locally for his martial arts skills. Influenced from a young age, Jiang began practicing martial arts at the age of 12. He initially studied the hard-soft Southern Fist style under Zhang Hongbo, training with sandbags, lifting stone locks, and climbing bamboo poles. By adulthood, he could carry 90-jin (approximately 45 kg) weights across the pond gorge.
