Former Residence of Huang Shaoji

The former residence of Huang Shaoji is a cultural relic protection unit of Rui’an City.

The former residence of Huang Shaoji is located at No. 12, Jiǔqū Lòng, Xiǎoshā Xiàng, Yùhǎi Subdistrict, Rui’an City. It was built in the late Qing Dynasty. Facing east and situated west, the residence mainly consists of structures such as a screen wall, entrance gate, and main building. The screen wall features a three-bay winged design with a flush gable roof, and the central bay of the main section is adorned with a molded relief pattern combining the characters for “prosperity, wealth, and longevity.” The entrance gate has three bays and extends two bays deep, also with a winged, flush-gable construction. Both the main and secondary buildings are two-story structures, each spanning three bays in width and six bays in depth, with a mixed post-and-lintel and Dougong (bracket arm) structural system. They feature double-eaved flush gable roofs with a combination of concave and convex tiles.

Huang Shaoji (1854–1908), styled Zhòng?|, later changed his courtesy name to Xiān’ān after his father’s death. He referred to himself as Zhāi Jūshì and used the alias Jīnzhú Shānmín. A native of Rui’an, he studied at the Southern School of the Imperial College in the third year of the Guangxu reign (1877) during the Qing Dynasty. He passed the imperial examination and became a Jinshi (presented scholar) in the sixth year, entering the Hanlin Academy. In the ninth year, he was appointed as a compiler upon completion of his probationary period, took on an additional role as a compiler at the Collected Statutes Office in the tenth year, and served as an editor at the Wuying Hall and the National History Office in the eleventh year. In the twelfth year, he was assigned to tutor candidates for the imperial examination. In the thirteenth year, he was granted the honorary title of Shíjiǎng. He proofread Sun Yirang’s commentary on Mozi, correcting over ten points and writing a postscript.
