Tomb of Marquis Anxiang of the Han Dynasty

The Tomb of Marquis Anxiang of the Han Dynasty is a cultural relic protection unit of Rui’an City.

The Tomb of Marquis Anxiang of the Han Dynasty is located in Zhou’ao Village, Jinhu Subdistrict, Rui’an City. It was renovated in the 26th year of the Republic of China (1937). Facing west and backed by the east, it consists of two parts: the burial chamber and the sacrificial altar. The tomb is rectangular, about 2 meters above the ground, built with block stones on all sides, measuring 18 meters in width and 9 meters in depth. A tombstone is embedded in the tomb wall, inscribed with “Tomb of Marquis Anxiang of the Han Dynasty, Cai Gong. The 26th Year of the Republic of China, the Year of Dingsi, June, Auspicious Day. Erected by Chi Zhizan.”

According to the Rui’an County Annals: Cai Jingze, Marquis Anxiang of the Han Dynasty, styled Wenzhuang, was a native of Rui’an. In his youth, he was known for his integrity and sense of justice. By the time he reached adulthood, he had mastered the classics. During the Guanghe era (178–184) of Emperor Ling of the Han, he was recommended as a filial and incorruptible official and appointed as the magistrate of Nanyang. Later, he resigned from office and returned home. At a time when bandits were rising across the land, he raised troops to resist the Yue invaders and was commended for his achievements. He was then appointed as the Commandant of the Eastern Part of Yongning County (now within the territory of Rui’an), setting up his administrative office on Shaogong Islet. His governance was clear and strict, bringing great order to the region. He reduced punishments and conserved resources, ensuring bumper harvests year after year. For his service, he was granted the title of Marquis Anxiang.
