Jiangshan Qingyang Village

Jiangshan Qingyang Village is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

Qingyang Village is located in Shimen Town, Jiangshan City, at the northern foot of the Jianglang Mountain, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. The ancient Xianxia Ancient Path, an overland extension of the Maritime Silk Road, runs near the village. The village currently has 8 villager groups, 345 households, and 1,168 residents. In 2009, the village collective economy income was 820,000 yuan, and the per capita net income of farmers was 6,898 yuan. Jiangshan has long been the central settlement area of the Mao clan in the Jiangnan region. It was when Mao Yuanqiong (also known as Qingyang), the eighth-generation descendant of Mao Bao, settled at the northern foot of Jianglang Mountain that his descendants later named the village after his courtesy name, thus giving the village its name, Qingyang.

The Qingyang Mao clan has a long and illustrious history. Since Mao Yuanqiong settled in Qingyang, the Mao clan has thrived here for generations, producing many talented individuals and gradually growing into the main branch of the Mao clan in Jiangnan. While rooted in Jiangshan, the Qingyang Mao clan gradually migrated to regions across Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Hubei, Guangdong, Yunnan, Fujian, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, and even overseas. Eighty to ninety percent of the Mao clans in Jiangnan are branches of the Qingyang Mao clan. The "Qingyang Mao Clan Genealogy," listed among the first 48 national treasure archives, clearly records the proliferation and migration of the Jiangnan Mao clan. Existing genealogical records of prominent Mao families across Jiangnan all explicitly state direct or indirect descent from Qingyang in Jiangshan. Prominent lineages such as the Mao clan of Jishui in Jiangxi, the Mao clan of Shaoshan in Hunan, the Mao clan of Fenghua in Zhejiang, and the Mao clan of Hezhou in Guangxi all trace their roots back to Qingyang. Thus, Qingyang is well-deservedly recognized as the "Birthplace of the Jiangnan Mao Clan." In October 2009, Mao Xinyu, Mao Zedong’s grandson, along with Mao clan representatives from various regions, attended the genealogy presentation and ancestral recognition ceremony held in Qingyang.

The Qingyang Mao clan has profound cultural heritage and has produced many notable figures. The village is blessed with talented individuals, having given birth to a large number of historical figures. Among the more renowned are Mao Pang, a great poet of the Song Dynasty, and Mao Kai, who served as Minister of Rites, Minister of Personnel, and Minister of Justice during the Ming Dynasty. Qingyang Village is also the ancestral home of both the great leader Mao Zedong and Mao Fumei, the first wife of Chiang Kai-shek. According to genealogical records from various regions, both Mao Zedong and Mao Fumei are 56th-generation direct descendants of the Qingyang Mao clan. In modern times, Qingyang continues to produce exceptional talent. Mao Zishui, a renowned scholar of traditional Chinese studies from Taiwan, was born in Qingyang. In addition, the village has produced many notable figures in science and technology, education, and government.

The Qingyang Mao clan values literature and integrity over wealth. The Mao clan fully inherited the virtues of hard work, simplicity, and uprightness from their ancestors. Nurtured by the land of Jiangshan, they further developed distinct spiritual characteristics, including loyalty to the country, diligence in governance, love for the people, integrity and honesty, and commitment to justice. The Qingyang Mao clan has always adhered to the tradition of “achieving fame through scholarship and maintaining a clean family legacy.” Historically, the village has produced 8 Ministers and 83 Jinshi (successful candidates in the highest imperial examinations). Although Qingyang has produced many high-ranking officials, its existing ancient architectural complexes remain simple and unadorned, reflecting the clan’s enduring adherence to the ancestral motto of maintaining a clean legacy. Qingyang Village is a base for patriotic education. In January 2010, it was also designated as a Zhejiang Province Integrity Culture Education Base.
