Qianxian Granary Complex

The Qianxian Granary Complex is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Zhejiang Province.

The Qianxian Granary Complex is located in Qianxian Community, Shuangta Subdistrict, Jiangshan City.

The Qianxian Granary Complex, which stopped being used in the mid-1990s, consists of eight granaries arranged in two rows with four in each row. Each granary has a cylindrical wall and a pyramidal roof covered with interlocking clay tiles. The outer walls are mainly white with black bases, and the upper-middle parts have two windows. The junction between the upper end and the eaves uses a narrow-edged, four-tiered receding structure. Within each row, the granaries are spaced 0.5 meters apart but are connected by shared walls. The distance between the two rows is 5 meters, forming a corridor with a ceiling that aligns with the lower edge of the granary roof tiles. Above this, there are also auxiliary structures that rise to two floors high. The northernmost and southernmost granaries are enclosed by walls, integrating the eight granaries into a single architectural complex. Each of the uniformly sized granaries has an interior diameter of 8 meters, an interior height of 7.3 meters, and walls that are 0.4 meters thick, built from rammed earth. The inner walls, along with other walls, are coated in white lime plaster.

It is understood that as a representative modern-era structure, the Qianxian Granary Complex features an aesthetically pleasing design with a perfectly applied arc structure, while also incorporating typical elements of ancient architecture. Its remarkably well-preserved state makes it quite rare in western Zhejiang, giving it high historical preservation value. At the same time, it provides valuable reference material for the study of granary construction during a specific historical period. In January 2011, the Qianxian Granary Complex was designated as a provincial-level cultural heritage site.

Qianxian Community: Located in the city center of Jiangshan, Qianxian Community is home to the municipal Party committee and government. It borders Luxi Middle Road to the east, Zhongshan Road to the south, Huancheng West Road to the west, and Beiguan Road to the north. Established in September 2001, the community covers an area of 520,000 square meters and currently has 61 resident groups, 3,780 households, and a population of 9,213. The community’s Party general branch includes five branches with a total of 202 registered party members.
