Nanjing Loyal Souls Pavilion

The Loyal Souls Pavilion is the “closing” project of the Yuhuatai Martyrs' Cemetery Park, built with special party fees donated by 300,000 Party members in Nanjing. The structure consists of four parts: the Loyal Souls Pavilion, the Loyal Souls Plaza, the “Source-Remembering Melody” pool, and the “Ode to the Loyal Souls” relief. It was completed on July 1, 1996.

The Loyal Souls Pavilion was inscribed with its name by —, and is located on the hilltop at an altitude of 43 meters at the southern end of the main architectural complex. Constructed from granite, the main structure measures 5.8 meters in both length and width, and stands 8.3 meters tall, featuring a pointed roof and a square reinforced concrete frame with four entrances. The lower skirt on the western side of the pavilion bears an inscription indicating that it was funded by donations from 300,000 Party members in Nanjing.

The Loyal Souls Plaza is situated between the Loyal Souls Pavilion and the memorial hall, covering an area of approximately 3,000 square meters. The ground, paved with emery stone, is solid and resilient, enhancing the solemn and majestic atmosphere of the Loyal Souls Pavilion. The “Source-Remembering Melody” pool lies between the northern slope of the Loyal Souls Pavilion and the southern edge of the Loyal Souls Plaza, measuring 20 meters in length, 15 meters in width, and 1.5 meters in depth. It symbolizes “never forgetting the martyrs, eternal commemoration; remembering the source as you drink the water, passing it on from generation to generation.” The “Ode to the Loyal Souls” relief, designed and created by artists organized by the Jiangsu Art Museum, stands on the eastern and western sides of the “Source-Remembering Melody” pool, measuring 20 meters in length and 3 meters in height. The themes of the relief are “Struggle in Prison” and “Martyrdom at the Execution Ground,” showcasing the heroic, unyielding, and solemnly tragic historical spirit of the martyrs.
