Tomb of Yu Tonghai

The Tomb of Yu Tonghai is a cultural relic protection unit of Nanjing City.

The Tomb of Yu Tonghai is located within the Chen Guang Machinery Factory in Yuhua District and dates back to the Ming Dynasty.

Yu Tonghai’s tomb is situated north of Yuhuatai, outside Zhonghua Gate, as part of the Yu family cemetery complex. Stone carvings are found in front of the tomb. Descendants of the Yu family built the Yu Family Ancestral Hall in front of the tomb. The tombstone of Yu Tonghai is inscribed with: “Tomb of Yu Tonghai, styled Bizhu, of the Ming Dynasty, formerly the Minister of the Central Secretariat and Grand Councilor, posthumously honored as Duke of Guoguo”

Yu Tonghai (1329–1366), styled Bizhu, was a founding general of the Ming Dynasty and the eldest son of Yu Tingyu, granted the title Marquis of Hejian. Initially, he occupied Chaohu Lake as a bandit before surrendering to Zhu Yuanzhang. Skilled in naval warfare, he followed Zhu Yuanzhang in numerous military campaigns across the south and north, making significant contributions. He rescued Zhu Yuanzhang during the great Battle of Poyang Lake. He eventually rose to the position of Grand Councilor of the Central Secretariat.

Later, he died from an arrow wound during the siege of Pingjiang at the age of 38 and left no sons. He was posthumously honored as Duke of Guoguo and given the posthumous name “Zhonglie” (Loyal and Heroic).
