Banqiao, also known as Guxiong, was historically referred to as Banqiao Pu during the Han Dynasty. As recorded in Li Daoyuan’s Commentary on the Water Classic: “The Yangtze River flows past Sanshan, and from Xiangpu it branches off. A pontoon bridge was built across the river from north to south to facilitate crossing, hence the name Banqiao Pu.” This pontoon bridge was the earliest iteration of Banqiao. Historically, this area has been a hub for merchants and a gathering place for scholars and culture. Salt, ceramics, timber, and bamboo products converged here before being distributed far and wide.
