Residential House at No. 228 Zuosuo Street [No. 228, Zuosuo Street, Dongmen, Taishan Subdistrict, Pukou District · Late Qing to Early Republican Era · Municipal-Level Cultural Relics Protection Unit] was originally the inner residence of Yang Huai Shan (courtesy name Guangsheng, dates of birth and death unknown), a prominent local businessman from Dongmen. It was built in the late Qing and early Republican period. Yang Guangsheng was a major landowner and industrialist whose business once flourished extensively. He owned businesses such as the Guangsheng General Store, Guangsheng Sauce Shop, and Guangsheng Grain Store on Zuosuo Street in Dongmen. It is said he also had ventures in Tokyo and Kobe, Japan. After the liberation, Yang’s properties were nationalized, and this residence, along with the nearby Guangsheng Sauce Shop, served as the office of the Dongmen Town Government. Following the merger of Dongmen Town Government and Sanhe Township Government into Taishan Town, the site became the training center of the Pukou District Party School. In the late 1980s, during an expansion of the Party School, the Guangsheng Sauce Shop and other structures were demolished, leaving only the Guangsheng inner residence, which was repurposed as an office building. The residence is 38.65 meters wide and 56.3 meters deep, with interconnected front and inner courtyards. The surviving inner residence features a blend of Chinese and Western architectural styles, including a grand gate tower adorned with carvings of the Eight Trigrams and the character 福 (fortune). Each of its eight lattice windows is uniquely designed. Both the front and rear courtyards are paved with bricks from the ancient Pukou City wall, showcasing the charm of traditional residential architecture. Influences of Western design are evident through the use of new materials and construction techniques of the time, such as terrazzo flooring, the main gate and door, hollow “wan” (卍) character iron railings, and dual rear drying terraces. Later, when the original Pukou District Party School and the former Jiangpu County Party School merged to form a new district-level Party School, this residence was left unused for many years. It was designated as a District-Level Cultural Relics Protection Unit in 1998 and as a Municipal-Level Cultural Relics Protection Unit in 2006.

Since the establishment of the new Pukou District, Taishan Subdistrict has actively integrated into the riverfront development initiative and Nanjing’s cross-river development strategy.
