Jiangsu University

Jiangsu University was established in August 2001 with the approval of the Ministry of Education through the merger of the former Jiangsu University of Science and Technology, Zhenjiang Medical College, and Zhenjiang Teachers College. The predecessor of the former Jiangsu University of Science and Technology, Zhenjiang Agricultural Machinery College, was independently established in 1960 as a branch from Nanjing Institute of Technology (now Southeast University), and in 1978 it was designated by the State Council as one of the 88 key universities nationwide. In 1981, it became one of the first universities in China authorized to confer doctoral, master’s, and bachelor’s degrees. It was renamed Jiangsu Institute of Technology in 1982 and Jiangsu University of Science and Technology in 1994. Its overall strength has consistently ranked among the top 100 universities in China. The university is located in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province, a national historical and cultural city known for its beautiful scenery. Its history of education dates back to 1902, when the Sanjiang Normal School was founded in Nanjing by Liu Kunyi, Zhang Zhidong, and others.

The university offers a comprehensive range of disciplines, covering 10 major academic fields: engineering, science, medicine, management, economics, law, literature, history, education, and art. It comprises 24 colleges and 88 undergraduate programs. The university has doctoral degree authorization in 13 first-level disciplines and operates 13 postdoctoral research stations. It also offers master’s degree authorization in 42 first-level disciplines, 10 categories of professional master’s degrees, and 26 engineering master’s fields. There are currently 2 national key disciplines, 1 national key (cultivation) discipline, and 6 advantageous disciplines of Jiangsu higher education institutions. Five of its disciplines—engineering, materials science, clinical medicine, chemistry, and agricultural sciences—are ranked in the top 1% of the ESI global rankings (tied at 34th among universities nationwide). In the 2015 Times Higher Education BRICS and Emerging Economies University Rankings, the university was ranked 181st. According to the 2016 China University Evaluation by the Chinese Academy of Management Science, Jiangsu University was ranked 48th among universities nationwide.

The campus covers an area of 2,822 mu, with a total construction area of over 1.28 million square meters. The total value of teaching and research equipment is 760 million yuan. The library has a floor area of 51,000 square meters, houses over 3.05 million volumes, and provides access to more than 1.73 million e-books. It also hosts a Ministry of Education Scientific and Technological Information Consultation Station. The university operates a Grade III Class A affiliated hospital that integrates medical treatment, education, research, and prevention. It also has the Jiangsu University Press.
