Jiangsu Normal University

Jiangsu Normal University is a university jointly established by the Jiangsu Provincial Government and the Ministry of Education, serving as a regional leading and exemplary institution. The university originated from the Southern Jiangsu Military Region – Cultural Accelerated Training School, founded in 1952 in Wuxi, Jiangsu. Liu Xiansheng, a highly decorated lieutenant general, was its first president. In 1956, the school was provisionally named “Jiangsu Provincial Secondary School Teachers’ Training Class” (Preparatory Office of Wuxi Teachers College), officially incorporated into the regular higher education sequence for student recruitment. In 1957, it was established as Jiangsu Teachers College. In 1958, the school moved north to Xuzhou and in 1959 merged with Xuzhou Teachers College to form Xuzhou Teachers College, which was the only undergraduate institution in Northern Jiangsu at the time. In the early 1960s, during the nationwide restructuring of higher education institutions, the beloved Premier Zhou Enlai instructed: “The Xuzhou region is vast and should have a university,” allowing the school to be retained. Since then, the university has taken root in Northern Jiangsu, striving to develop step by step. It began enrolling master’s students in 1979 and became one of the first institutions in China authorized to confer master’s degrees in 1981. In 1996, approved by the former State Education Commission, the school was renamed Xuzhou Normal University. In 1999, Xuzhou Industrial School, formerly under the Ministry of Coal Industry, was incorporated. In November 2011, the Ministry of Education replied to the Jiangsu Provincial Government, approving the renaming of Xuzhou Normal University to Jiangsu Normal University.

The university currently has four campuses—Quanshan, Yunlong, Kuiyuan, and Jiawang—covering an area of 2,047 acres with a total building area of 812,000 square meters. The value of teaching and research equipment amounts to 520 million yuan, and the library houses 2.79 million volumes. The university comprises 22 specialized colleges as well as the Jingwen College, School of Continuing Education, International College, independent college Kewen College, and the first non-independent legal entity Sino-Russian cooperative educational institution approved by the Ministry of Education—the Joint Engineering Institute of Jiangsu Normal University and Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University. There are 68 undergraduate programs, 28 first-level discipline master's programs, one doctoral talent training program serving national special needs, one postdoctoral research station, spanning 11 academic disciplines. It offers eight professional master’s degree programs including Master of Education, Master of Physical Education, Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, Master of Fine Arts, Master of Translation and Interpreting, Master of Engineering, Master of Laws, and Master of Public Administration, along with the right to confer master’s degrees based on equivalent academic qualifications and the recommendation for exemption from master’s entrance exams. The university currently enrolls over 20,000 full-time undergraduate students and more than 3,000 doctoral and master’s students. It is among the first group of universities in China qualified to admit international students and has successively established friendly cooperative relations with 58 universities in the UK, US, Australia, Russia, and other countries, hosting students from 26 countries and regions. It co-established Confucius Institutes with two universities in the US and Australia, among which the Confucius Institute at Miami Dade College was honored as a “Global Outstanding Confucius Institute.” It also established the world’s first overseas Mencius Institute in Malaysia. The university carries out cooperative education programs and credit recognition initiatives with universities in the US, Australia, Japan, Russia, and Belarus, and collaborates with world-renowned institutions such as Harvard University and the University of Hong Kong on faculty and management training programs. Since its founding, the university has produced over 180,000 graduates, with a large number of accomplished alumni actively contributing in politics, economy, culture, science and technology, education, and other fields both in China and abroad.
