Ban Zhuang Red Scarf Reservoir (1957–1958)

The Red Scarf Reservoir is situated north of Qianji Village, Ban Zhuang Town, Ganyu District, Lianyungang City. Constructed between 1957 and 1958 with over 70,000 yuan donated by schoolchildren in Jiangsu Province, it is a comprehensive reservoir with a water storage capacity of 4.4 million cubic meters. On December 30, 1957, the Xinmin Bao (New People’s Daily) published a report titled “Jiangsu’s Red Scarves Support the Forty Articles,” which caught the attention of Mao Zedong. He instructed Qiao Mu to review the news on the Red Scarves and also check the Jiangsu newspapers, suggesting that Xinhua News Agency write and broadcast a news item based on it. Xinhua News Agency aired the story on January 10, 1958. A memorial monument for the reservoir stands on a small hill on the eastern shore, protected by a pavilion. It was China’s first reservoir named after the Red Scarf, and after its completion, similar initiatives were undertaken across the country.

Ban Zhuang Town: In the 2013 administrative division adjustment, Huan Dun Town and Ban Zhuang Town were merged to form the new Ban Zhuang Town. The consolidation not only doubled the population to nearly 100,000 but also nearly doubled the land area to 175.61 square kilometers. The new Ban Zhuang Town has become the largest town in Ganyu County in terms of area, governing 44 village committees.

Ban Zhuang Town is located in the western part of Ganyu County, Lianyungang City, at the junction of two provinces (Jiangsu and Shandong) and three counties (Ganyu, Donghai, and Linshu).
