The Tomb of Zhu Zi is a cultural relic protection unit of Lianyungang City.

Tomb of Zhu Zi

Located 400 meters northwest of Zhutun Village, Shahe Town, Ganyu District, Lianyungang City, on the north side of the road. Zhu Zi (1542–1616), courtesy name Kongcai, was a native of Shahe Town. He served successively as Prefect of Daozhou, Magistrate of Tianzhu County, and Grand Master for Splendid Ceremony. He passed away due to illness in the 44th year of the Wanli era (1616). The tomb covers an area of 240 square meters, stands 4 meters high, and is surrounded by over 60 pine trees. A stele stands in front of the tomb, and 20 meters in front of it is a stone memorial archway, on whose lintel are inscribed four characters — “Kuangdai Qixun” (Extraordinary Merits Through the Ages) — written by Li Sancan, the Grand Canal Transport Commissioner of the Wanli era.

In the 21st year of the Wanli era (1593), Zhu Zi was appointed as Clerk of the Tianzhu Imperial Garrison of Jingzhou, Huguang Province. Within a year, he pacified over 20 strongholds that had defied imperial authority. By the third year, civilians and soldiers were living and working in peace and contentment. Zhu Zi was promoted to Magistrate of Haiyan County, Zhejiang, but upon hearing the news, the local people petitioned tearfully to keep him. Deeply moved, the court established Tianzhu County and promoted Zhu Zi to Magistrate. He thus became the first recorded person in history for whom a county was created. After his passing, the Miao people transported stones from Tianzhu over ten thousand li to Ganyu to build his tomb and erect a stele. They mourned for three months before departing. Two of them stayed behind, never married, and guarded the tomb until their deaths, eventually being buried beside Zhu Zi’s tomb on the western side.

In 2010, it was designated as part of the fourth batch of cultural relic protection units of Lianyungang City.

Protected Area:

West to 30 meters west of the tomb base, east to 30 meters east of the tomb base, north to 10 meters north of the tomb base, south to the village’s east-west main road (30 meters).

Construction Control Zone:

The protected area extended 150 meters in all directions.
