“China’s No. 1 Buddhist Pagoda – Tianning Pagoda began foundation work in April 2002 with an investment of nearly 300 million RMB. After nearly five years of construction, it officially opened to the public on New Year’s Eve, February 17, 2007. The chief architect of the pagoda is Professor Lu Bingjie from Tongji University in Shanghai. The pagoda is located right behind Tianning Temple and is an octagonal, flying-eave structure designed in the style of the Tang and Song dynasties. It has a total floor area of 27,000 square meters, stands 13 stories tall at 153.79 meters, making it the tallest among China’s more than 4,000 pagodas and the highest steel-structured Buddhist pagoda in the world. The pagoda features a Tang-Song pavilion-style design with an octagonal layout. Its body is constructed with a steel frame, while the spire is modeled after a Vajra Throne Pagoda, cast from 70 tons of bronze and covered with gold leaf, giving it a resplendent golden appearance. The exterior walls are clad with white marble, showcasing a golden roof and jade-like body. Over 1,000 small white marble pagodas surround the main tower at the base, creating a magnificent pagoda forest. A 30,000-jin (approximately 15-ton) bronze bell hangs at the 13th floor, 118 meters above ground, producing a melodious sound that spreads blessings far and wide. In terms of scale, height, materials, and significance, Tianning Pagoda can be regarded as the finest in China and among the greatest in the world of Buddhist pagodas.

The completion of the pagoda corresponds symbolically with the Northern Yungang Giant Buddha, the Central Plains Longmen Giant Buddha, the Western Leshan Giant Buddha, the Eastern Lingshan Giant Buddha, and the Southern Hong Kong Tian Tan Buddha, adding new radiance to the global Buddhist community.
