Xu Residence at Huangtiandang

The Xu Residence at Huangtiandang is a protected cultural heritage site of Changzhou City.

The Xu Residence at Huangtiandang is located in Beixiashu Village, Huangtiandang Village Committee, Zhenglu Town, Tianning District. It was built over a five-year period between 1894 and 1899 by Xu Boqing, a Qing Dynasty scholar and headmaster of Gaoshan Academy in Sanhekou. Originally, the property had four courtyards, but now only the third main building remains—the rest were destroyed during the War of Resistance against Japan. The Xu family made significant contributions to the local cultural development. Historical records mention that Xu Boqing wrote 268 poems. In the early years after liberation, Xu Xuexi served as the principal of Beixiashu Junior High School. Other notable descendants include Xu Xueyan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Xu Xueshou, a former deputy provincial-level official in Anhui Province; and Cai Xu, who once studied at the Xu family’s private school.

Huangtiandang Village: Located in the northeastern part of Zhenglu Town, Huangtiandang Village borders Shijiachang Village to the south, Qiangjia Village to the west, and Jiangyin to the north. Provincial Highway S232 and the Lupugang River run north-south through the village, providing convenient land and water transportation. In April 2010, the original Huangtiandang Village and Donggu Village were merged to form the new Huangtiandang Village. The village now covers an area of 5.43 square kilometers, with a residential area of 1,760 mu. It consists of 28 villager groups, 10 natural villages, 1,459 households, and a total population of 3,768, including 167 Communist Party members.
