The 88th Floor Observation Deck of Jinmao Tower, at a height of 340.1 meters and an area of 1,520 square meters, is currently the largest observation deck in China.

As one of the first national 4A-level tourist attractions, the 88th Floor Observation Deck of Jinmao Tower is the highest and largest of its kind in China, having been recognized as a Shanghai Great World Guinness Record. The two high-speed vertical elevators, traveling at 9.1 meters per second, can carry up to 33 passengers at a time and take just 45 seconds to whisk visitors from the basement level all the way up to the 88th floor. From this vantage point, you can take in the breathtaking panorama of Shanghai — the dense cluster of skyscrapers along both banks of the Huangpu River and the countless vessels sailing on its waters. Here, you can personally experience the poetic beauty of “a lone duck with the sunset clouds flying together, the autumn water merging with the boundless sky in one hue.” After enjoying the outdoor views, you can also look down and admire the world’s unparalleled hotel atrium. With a diameter of 27 meters, its 28 circular corridors sparkle under neon lights. Each ring resembles a gallery of art, offering a truly magnificent sight. This awe-inspiring scene will move you and inspire you to capture the moment with your camera. The extraordinary hotel atrium of Jinmao Tower has been hailed by architects, scientists, and writers as a “shared space,” a “golden ring of time,” and a “tunnel through time and space.”

To ensure visitor convenience, the underground level near the entrance and exit of the observation deck features a food court offering a variety of affordable and delicious fast food options. On the podium floors three to six, you’ll find stainless steel spiral staircases, glass-floored skybridges, and suspended zigzag bridges. In early 1999, another iconic building proudly rose along the Huangpu River. The long-awaited Jinmao Tower, the third tallest in the world and the tallest in China with 88 floors, was finally launched to the market. This intelligent skyscraper integrates modern office spaces, a luxurious five-star hotel, commercial exhibition halls, high-end banquet facilities, observation decks, entertainment venues, and shopping malls. Rich in Chinese cultural heritage and infused with the wisdom of Western architectural art, it has become one of the most convenient, comfortable, flexible, and secure destinations in Shanghai for business, finance, commerce, entertainment, and dining. Approved for construction in February 1992, Jinmao Tower broke ground on May 10, 1994, topped out structurally on August 28, 1997, and officially opened on March 18, 1999, with full operations commencing on August 28 of the same year. The tower occupies a land area of 2.3 hectares, with a tower height of 420.5 meters and a total floor area of 290,000 square meters.

Located at the entrance of the Yan’an East Road Tunnel in Pudong, adjacent to Century Avenue, the tower sits at the heart of Lujiazui Financial and Trade Zone — the core area of Pudong. The designer of Jinmao Tower is the renowned SOM Design Firm from Chicago, USA. With innovative design concepts, the architects skillfully blended the latest global architectural trends with traditional Chinese architectural styles, successfully creating a world-class, cross-century masterpiece. It stands as a milestone in Shanghai-style architecture and has become one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. In June 1998, it won the Illinois World Structural Engineering Award. In October 1999, it claimed the top prize in the Gold Award category of the “Top Ten Classic Buildings in Shanghai for the 50th Anniversary of New China.”

Ticket Prices

120 RMB for adults, 50 RMB for children, and 90 RMB for students with a valid student ID. Children between 0.8 m and 1.3 m tall pay 60 RMB each; undergraduate students and below pay 90 RMB each; seniors aged 70 and above with ID pay 100 RMB each. Children under 0.8 m, retired cadres, and active-duty military personnel are admitted free of charge upon presenting valid credentials.
